Toledo Clinic is seeking a Phlebotomist to assist laboratory staff with venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients. The role involves proper specimen preparation, maintenance of equipment, and strict adherence to HIPAA and OSHA safety standards.

The ideal candidate will have a phlebotomy diploma or equivalent, relevant certifications, and a demonstrated ability to work under supervision while meeting workload demands.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED.
  • Phlebotomy diploma from an accredited school.
  • Phlebotomy certification and 6 months previous experience.
  • Certified Phlebotomist.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients.
  • Receive logs, handle and process various body fluids, and store in an acceptable manner.
  • Verify patient/specimen identification and inform technical personnel and/or Supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients.
  • Prepare all types of lab specimens according to established procedures including reference work to outside laboratories.
  • Perform simple maintenance of equipment and record temperatures, and clean centrifuges and refrigerators.
  • Maintain accurate records of reference specimens picked up and/or sent out to other labs.
  • Process and transport infectious waste to a centralized pick-up location and sign the manifest.
  • Perform and record qualitative determination for urine glucose and acetone.

Job description

Hours: Monday - Friday 9:30 am - 6:15 pm at our main campus on Secor Rd

General Summary

Assists laboratory staff in meeting workload demands including venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients.

Works under the supervision of the Administrative Laboratory Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Consistently arrives at work on time and adheres to regular work schedule.
  • Receives logs, handles and processes various body fluids, exudates or scraping, and stores in an acceptable manner.
  • Verifies patient/specimen identification and informs technical personnel and/or Supervisor of any discrepancies.
  • Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients.
  • Properly prepares all types of lab specimens according to established procedures which include special requirements for reference work to outside laboratories or special studies.
  • Performs simple maintenance of equipment; i.e. reads and records temperatures, cleans centrifuges and refrigerators.
  • Maintains accurate and thorough records of what reference specimens have been picked up and/or sent out to other labs.
  • Processes and transports infectious waste to a centralized pick-up location and signs the appropriate manifest.
  • Performs and records qualitative determination for urine glucose and acetone according to established procedures.
Other Essential Duties May Include but Are Not Limited To
  • Transports specimens from other lab collection sites to the main lab in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

Required:

  • Consistently arrives at work in appropriate/professional attire.
  • Completes all tasks within established time frame.
  • Adheres to all clinic policies and procedures.
  • Knows, understands and adheres to all laboratories, Clinic, HIPPA and/or OSHA safety standards.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques involved in routine tests.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • When presented with "STAT" request(s), stops all other routine activities and promptly addresses the STAT.
  • Promptly delivers STAT specimens to technical work area and informs appropriate technicians in a non-threatening manner.
  • Seeks appropriate tasks when primary tasks are completed and assists co-workers as needed.
  • Demonstrates adaptability to expanded roles.

Education:

  • HS diploma or GED.
  • Phlebotomy diploma from an accredited school.

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy certification and 6 months previous experience.
  • Certified Phlebotomist.
