Job summary

Shannon & Wilson Inc. seeks an experienced Lab Manager to oversee geotechnical soils laboratory testing and daily lab operations in Anchorage, Alaska.

The role requires leadership of lab technicians, coordination with project staff, and adherence to QA, safety, and industry standards. The candidate will perform tests (gradations, Atterberg limits, compaction, triaxial tests), maintain equipment, and ensure data integrity while communicating progress to clients and staff.

Qualifications

• BS Civil Engineering or Geology degree or 5+ years as lab technician
• Experience performing geotechnical soils laboratory tests
• Knowledge of lab equipment, supplies, and related software
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively
• Willingness to travel to support other Shannon & Wilson offices
• Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record
• Proficient with MS Word and Excel; MS Access desirable

Job Summary

The Lab Manager is responsible for performing laboratory testing and supervising the daily operations of the Lab.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical soils laboratory testing, including gradations, swell, Atterberg limits, compaction, triaxial strength, consolidation, and ring shear.
• Maintain laboratory accreditation, certifications, and calibrations.
• Use and maintain scientific testing equipment.
• Process test data using computer software.
• Communicate test progress and present test results.
• Ensure that laboratory testing practices comply with applicable standards and industry practices.
• Supervise and review the work of lab technicians.
• Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
• Follow Shannon & Wilsons Quality Assurance policy.
• Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson's Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

• BS Civil Engineering or Geology degree.
• 5 plus years of experience as a laboratory technician would be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Experience completing geotechnical soils laboratory tests.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment, related supplies, computer hardware and software, and their applications.
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively as appropriate
• Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
• Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
• The ability to work independently with the appropriate level of or minimal supervision.
• The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
• A valid driver license and insurable driving record.
• Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); MS Access (desirable).
• Critical thinking and analysis.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 30+ pounds.
• Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.
• The ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Senior-Level Lab Technician typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Technical Service IV level or Senior Technical Services level.
