Job summary

Texas Oncology is seeking a Lab Assistant Sr to join the Dallas team. Hours are 8:00a-4:30p, Monday-Friday, at the Dallas, TX location. The role entails collecting and processing specimens, documenting results, instrument maintenance, QA, and safety compliance.

Qualifications

  • Level 1: High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Level 2: Minimum three years laboratory experience.
  • Level Sr: Minimum five years laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.
  • Maintains proper documentation per quality assurance programs.
  • Performs specimen analysis of chemistry, hematology, immunology as directed.
  • Maintains inventory and ensures supplies are viable for testing.
  • Preps patients as necessary (e.g., taking vital signs).
  • Assists with testing procedures per guidelines.
  • Sends specimens to reference laboratories as needed; processes orders and results.
  • Updates and files daily paperwork and lab logs.
  • Operates laboratory equipment per directions and maintains area.
  • Performs CLIA-waived or moderate complexity testing under supervision.

Overview

Texas Oncology is looking for a Lab Assistant Sr to join our team! This position will support the Dallas, Tx location. Hours are 8:00a-4:30p, Monday-Friday.

What does the Lab Assistant do?

Under direct supervision, the Lab Assistant is responsible for collecting and processing specimens from patients, documenting results according to established procedures, assisting with performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures, and following quality assurance and safety policies. They also assist with patient flow, properly identify patients, draw blood samples, send to laboratory for analysis, maintain collection areas and equipment, and perform record-keeping duties.

Responsibilities
  • Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.
  • Maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records and checklists.
  • Performs specimen analysis of all chemistry, hematology, immunology specimens as directed.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures that all supplies are viable before using in patient testing.
  • Preps patients as necessary (e.g., taking vital signs).
  • Assists with testing procedures according to procedure guidelines.
  • Sends specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in house. Processes incoming orders for lab testing. Processes in-house and incoming results for charting. Charts patient results in a timely manner.
  • Update and file all daily paperwork, lab logs and maintenance logs.
  • Arrange for transfusion of blood products when ordered by physician. Operates designated laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Uses equipment effectively, skillfully and efficiently. Maintains equipment and work area as directed. Performs testing under CLIA guidelines for personnel.
  • Performs daily, weekly and monthly instrument maintenance as indicated. Records proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrator, and reagents.
  • Identifies troubleshooting procedures and calls technical services as needed. Implements and complies with safety and quality assurance standards.
  • Complies with regulatory agency standards. Adheres to all OSHA compliance laws and Universal Precaution procedures.
  • Properly disposes of hazardous materials. Maintains a clean working environment and restocks the laboratory area as needed.
  • Performs phlebotomy and sample collection procedures as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients and medical staff.
  • Responsible for performing CLIA Waived or Moderately complexity testing under close supervision.
Qualifications

Level 1: High School diploma or equivalent required. Position is entry level and requires no experience.

Level 2 (in addition to Level 1 requirements): Minimum three years laboratory experience.

Level Sr (in addition to Level 1 and 2 requirements): Minimum five years laboratory experience.

Physical Demands

Physical demands typical include full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, sitting/standing for extensive periods, use of hands, fingers, arms to reach or carry, occasionally lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs, corrected vision, color perception and hearing within normal range, and legible handwriting.

Work Environment

The work environment includes regular exposure to direct contact with patients with potential for exposure to blood/body fluids, chemotherapeutic agents, or transmittable infections, direct contact with corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, handling glassware, needles and open flames.
