Job summary

Watson-Clinic is seeking a Regional Laboratory Assistant to perform phlebotomy and specimen processing duties. The role supports accurate specimen collection, labeling, and timely reporting within a fast-paced clinical lab.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma and phlebotomy experience, with strong data entry skills and knowledge of specimen handling. Experience with LIS and waived testing is preferred, and candidates should be ready to work across patient ages and multiple computer

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required along with previous phlebotomy experience.
  • Knowledge of specimen collection, specimen requirements, specimen integrity and specimen handling.

Responsibilities

  • Phlebotomy skills to obtain specimens correctly and maintain specimen integrity.
  • Verify patient information and label specimens accurately.
  • Enter data into LIS accurately for patient, tests, and accessioning.
  • Provide patient assistance and instructions on specimen collection.
  • Process specimens for accuracy, efficiency, productivity.
  • Perform waived testing and produce timely results.
  • Perform quality control on waived tests and maintain logs.
  • Participate in proficiency testing for waived testing.
  • Maintain documentation of problems and resolutions.
  • Answer physician and clinical staff questions promptly.
  • Consult reference materials and support for unusual tests.

Description
Summary/Objective:

A Regional Laboratory Assistant performs the dual role of the phlebotomy and specimen processing positions.

Essential Functions:

  • Phlebotomy s kills are such that specimens are obtained correctly and specimen integrity is maintained
  • Verifies accurate and correct information on patients and proceeds to accurate labeling of specimens
  • Accurate data entry skills in verifying correct patient information, requested tests, and specimen accessioning information into the LIS
  • Professional attitude with patients including assistance with patients’ questions and giving instructions on specimen collection and handling
  • Processes specimens to achieve maximum accuracy, efficiency, and productivity
  • Performs accurate and reproducible results of WAIVED testing as ordered by the physician producing results in a timely manner
  • Performs quality control on WAIVED testing and maintains records in the appropriate log
  • Participates in Proficiency Testing programs for WAIVED testing
  • Tracks and maintains records and reports and provides complete and full documentation of any problem or resolution of a problem
  • Responds to questions by physicians and other clinical staff in a timely manner
  • Uses available reference materials and telephone support to assure the appropriate handling of tests of an unusual nature
Requirements
Required Education and Experience:

High school diploma required along with previous phlebotomy experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

A minimum of one year experience as a phlebotomist, Laboratory Assistant, or Laboratory Specimen Processor to include phlebotomy performed on all ages and ability to adapt to multiple computer systems.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of medical terminology and data entry skills. Knowledge of specimen collection, specimen requirements, specimen integrity and specimen handling.
