Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen collection, processing, testing and reporting per protocols.
  • Maintains records of patient test results and quality control activities.
  • Follows procedures for specimen handling and processing and calibrations.
  • Identifies and documents corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specs.
  • Acts as a resource for staff during shifts and supports opening/closing of the department.

This includes the preanalytic, analytic, and post analytic phases of testing. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served; Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.Essential Functions: (Examples of Duties)Performs testing and patient collecting duties per protocols/proceduresDemonstrates and maintains competence in all procedures as requiredFollows the laboratory’s procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test resultsMaintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimensAdhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, and document all quality control activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performedFollow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performanceBe capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the Administrative Laboratory Director, or Laboratory SupervisorDocument all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.Responsible for functions related to “opening and closing” the departmentResponsible for ensuring that all orders/specimens for the day are handled prior to leaving shiftActs as a resource for other staff during the shift when neededJob Requirements/Qualifications: (Describe minimum qualifications, preferred or required)Education: High school graduate or equivalentExperience: Prior experience preferred, but not required.Knowledge and Skills:Excellent customer relations skillsExcellent verbal and written communications skillsAttention to detail and concentrationAbility to work in fast-paced, ever –changing environmentLicenses/Certifications: Encourage board certificationWorking Conditions:Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio hazard body fluid, and hazardous chemicalsSufficient noise and interruptions to cause distractions and stressHazardous working conditions in which individuals are exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentations, chemicals, and/or body fluidsCertain incidental functions may require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid-resistant coatsPhysical Demands:Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carry object weighting up to 25 poundsResponsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects
