Lab Assistant II – Hackensack, NJ

Quest Diagnostics is hiring a Lab Assistant II in Hackensack, NJ. This role is a hospital-based position at HUMC.

$2,000 sign‑on bonus for external applicants only

Pay range: $17.20 – $25.72 per hour. Employees may receive shift differential of 10% for some or all hours on second shift and 15% for some or all hours on third shift. Additional details will be provided with an offer. Salary offers are based on relevant skills, training, experience, education, and certifications. Successful candidates may be eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Responsibilities

Perform various routine laboratory functions in a precise and accurate fashion to assist laboratory professionals and facilitate production.

  • Perform specimen receiving, labeling, handling, and preparation.
  • Assist with pre‑analytical preparation of specimens (e.g., printing labels, uncap/cap specimen tubes, aliquot specimens, prepare racks, worklists, enter/scans specimens and load automated instruments).
  • Record digital temperature; notify licensed personnel if temperature is out of range.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance on some equipment.
  • Assist in preparation of chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
  • Clean, organize and maintain work area, glassware and laboratory equipment (e.g., refrigerators, freezers, supply cabinets).
  • Assist with monitoring the department pending and overdue lists, including searching, locating, following up and filing appropriate documentation.
  • Perform other departmental tasks such as filing, archiving and retrieving slides/blocks, reports, requisitions/other paperwork and answering the telephone.
  • Dispose of biohazardous material.
  • Enter data in laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Perform QA/QC duties as assigned.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
  • Comply with all health and safety policies, procedures and practices. Use personal protective equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • One (1) year full‑time experience in a technical or clinical laboratory department.
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Ability to follow steps without confusion or errors and retain information.
  • Detail‑oriented, able to work independently, establish priorities and handle several tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle client information confidentially.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. (Preferred in Florida, Required elsewhere.)
Physical Requirements
  • Normal performance may require lifting/carrying objects 1‑10 lbs frequently, 11‑25 lbs occasionally, 36‑50 lbs seldom, over 50 lbs not without assistance.
  • Ability to stand and work at bench for long periods.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • Use of manual and automated pipettes and instruments demanding manual dexterity.
