A day in the life…

Wondering what a day in the life of a Lab Assistant at The Iowa Clinic might look like?

  1. Arrive at work in the morning – no night shifts here!
  2. Collect, process, and store patient samples as per protocol and safety guidelines.
  3. Perform patient testing within specified timelines.
  4. Maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  5. Potential to move up to helping maintain the equipment, ensuring calibration and maintenance are completed within appropriate time frames.

Qualifications

  • A desire to find a meaningful, fulfilling career
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • One year laboratory experience
  • Ability to consistently meet work schedule demands in the clinic
  • Obtain adequate blood specimens from patients using appropriate specimen collection and handling procedures
  • Label all specimens in accordance with clinical laboratory standards and Clinic policies and procedures
  • Prepare specimens for delivery or deliver to appropriate laboratory areas
  • Perform laboratory testing utilizing laboratory equipment in accordance with Clinic policies/procedures and manufacturer guidelines within scope of training
  • Perform computer functions to support collection and processing of specimens
  • Maintain awareness of own safety, adhere to universal precautions and infection control policies
  • Enhance own knowledge through workshops, in-services, etc.
