Job summary

Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to perform waived and moderate complexity tests, collect specimens, and manage LIS documentation. You will ensure patient identification and accuracy while supporting clerical duties and maintaining clean work areas.

This role requires a High School Diploma, formal phlebotomy training, and three years of clinical lab experience. BLS within 45 days of hire is required; Phlebotomy Technician certification is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred.
• BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current.
• Minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience required.

Responsibilities

• Perform and report waived tests following established procedures and manufacturer instructions.
• Perform and report moderate complexity testing limited to qualitative assays.
• Responsible for specimen collection, processing, accessioning, labeling, centrifugation, and specimen handling and transport.
• Ensure accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and LIS documentation.
• Perform computer entry, filing, and telephone communications.
• Demonstrate good telephone etiquette and greet patients and visitors politely.
• Possess good communication skills and knowledge of tests' terminology.
• Demonstrate phlebotomy knowledge and equipment use for all ages.
• Prepare specimens for send-out to a reference laboratory.
• Stock and order routine supplies; keep areas clean.
• Other tasks may be assigned by department manager/director.

Overview

Responsibilities

Laboratory Assistants may perform duties in accordance with CLIA (42 CFR 493.1423) based on their documented education, training, and competency assessment.

• 1) may perform and report results for waived testing following established procedures and manufacturer instructions.
• 2) may perform and report results for moderate complexity testing limited to qualitative assays (e.g., rapid antigen tests, urine dipstick analysis, pregnancy testing)
• 3) responsible for specimen collection, processing, accessioning, labeling, centrifugation, and specimen handling and transport
• 4) ensures accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and documentation in the laboratory information system (LIS).
• 5) performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties,
• 6) demonstrates good telephone etiquette and be able to greet patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner,
• 7) possesses good communication skills,
• 8) demonstrates adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory,
• 9) demonstrates a good working knowledge of phlebotomy and the equipment used in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients,
• 10) preparation of specimens for send out to a reference laboratory,
• 11) stocks and orders routine supplies,
• 12) keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean,
• 13) other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred.
• BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.
• Minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience, required.

Pay Transparency

Central Maine Medical Center offers competitive compensation and a reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $20.79 - $24.90 . The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
