Job summary

The Biology Lab Assistant provides support to teaching labs for Human Biology and similar courses at the Arnold/Main Campus. Responsible for operation, preparation, and maintenance of designated biology labs, supplies, equipment, and safety practices.

Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager. Responsibilities include preparing materials, maintaining equipment, following safety policies, assisting faculty and students, and helping manage inventories.

Qualifications

  • Previous science laboratory related work experience.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, iPads, and Microsoft Office Application.
  • Willingness and ability to work a 12 month flexible schedule dependent on laboratory schedules and departmental needs.
  • Reliable, detail oriented, and capable of managing time to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of testing materials.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people (students, faculty, staff, public, etc.).
  • Experience with use and maintenance of biology laboratory equipment/instrumentation.
  • Ability to use basic tools to perform maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Prepare all materials and setup equipment and demonstrations for assigned biology laboratory courses in the Health & Life Sciences building. Update preparation manuals as necessary. Responsible for the set up and take down of assigned experiments according to established schedules and monitoring materials between lab sections.
  • 2. Responsible for the routine maintenance of the biology laboratories. Maintain the laboratory equipment and perform minor repairs. Monitor and stock supplies in HLSB classrooms and compile lists for replacement materials. Perform routine housekeeping of the laboratories. Keep labs in working order, clean, and well stocked. Generate facility work request as necessary.
  • 3. Be up to date and consistently follow established safety procedures for chemical and biological waste and electrical equipment. Follow and promote established safety policies and procedures by maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to procedures for the collection and storage of hazardous waste. Perform chemical and waste container checks. Test safety equipment and maintain records. Inform Laboratory Manager of problems or deficiencies.
  • 4. Provide assistance to faculty and students concerning laboratory equipment, demonstrations and set ups. Assemble materials for classroom and science outreach demonstrations.
  • 5. Assist with monitoring and updating inventories of equipment, supplies, and chemicals and advise Laboratory Manager of needs.
  • 6. Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager including running related errands, organizing and keeping records, assisting with room schedules, traveling to off-site campuses, participating in departmental cross-training activities, etc.

Position Summary
