Job summary

UVM Health - Porter Medical Center is seeking a Phlebotomist to support the Laboratory with frontline phlebotomy, specimen handling and lab order entry. The role emphasizes patient service, accuracy in data, and collaboration with technologists and staff.

Shifts vary from 3 to 6 hours. Education includes a High School Diploma or equivalent with nationally recognized phlebotomy certification recommended. Computer entry and basic medical terminology knowledge are desirable.

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy certification is highly recommended.
  • Phlebotomy experience is a plus.
  • Must read, write, and speak English.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Computer entry or word processing skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Customer service for lab clients.
  • Phlebotomy collection for testing.
  • Order entry and patient data handling.
  • Specimen processing and shipment to reference labs.
  • Uphold lab policies and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with technologists and staff.
  • Maintain quality in specimen handling.

Job Description

The Laboratory Assistant performs four essential roles in the function of the Laboratory:

  • Lab Customer Service
  • Phlebotomist
  • Lab Order Entry including handling of patient information and test results.
  • Specimen Processing and Shipment of samples to Reference Labs
  • Provides Exceptional Customer Service to all stakeholders in a manner that supports the mission, vision and values of the Laboratory and UVMHN
  • Obtains specimens for testing according to policies, procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Performs administrative duties to meet the needs of the Laboratory Department and the customers served by the laboratory
  • Processes specimens prior to testing, ensuring quality and adhering to established policies and procedures
  • Works collaboratively with coworkers, Technologists and other staff within department and in other departments throughout the Organization
  • Uses a variety of communication skills to meet the needs of the laboratory department and the customers served by the laboratory
  • Participates in continuing education and departmental development functions to support professional growth and departmental initiatives
Shift Details

Shifts vary from 3 hours in length to 6 hours.

Education

Able to read, write and speak the English language

High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience
  • Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency is highly recommended
  • Phlebotomy Experience is a plus
  • Computer entry or word processing skills required
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology desirable
  • Good interpersonal communication skills required
  • Approximately six months to a year is required to learn the job for satisfactory performance. The Laboratory Director will evaluate this.
