Responsibilities

  • If an expired animal is found, proper identification and storage/disposal is required.
  • Change bedding and caging periodically in accordance with Federal Regulations to ensure proper care of animals.
  • Disinfect animal areas at routine intervals.
  • Notify supervisor of any abnormalities in the physical environment of the animal facilities.
  • Inspect and report malfunctions of equipment such as thermostats, hygro-thermometers, lights, sanitation equipment, carts, etc.
  • Participate in continuing education courses of Laboratory Animal care.
  • Responsible for hands-on training and retraining of Animal Techs I, II and III.
  • Provide technical services for investigators, including but not limited to ear tagging, tail snipping, weaning, and setting up breeding cages.

Job Summary

This position requires manual labor in the care and feeding of laboratory animals. Work involves caring for laboratory animals in accordance with specific directions given by a supervisor. Duties include feeding and watering animals, transferring animals from cages and cleaning the cages, rooms and adjacent areas as well as providing technical services for investigators and hands‑on training for Animal Tech levels 1 through 3. Duties also include assembly line cage washing and clean cage preparation. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through observation of the animals and the cleanliness of cages, rooms and adjacent areas. An expanded knowledge base and experience in a directly related field is required for this position.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization with two years of experience working in animal care; or High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization with Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification with a minimum of one year of animal care experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness and ability to work with research animals.
Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday – Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Pay Band: B4. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum–midpoint) of the position.
Recruitment Period: Until Filled.
