Do you have a passion for accounting, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail? Do you want to work in a customer-focused environment that thrives on data integrity? If so, this is a great opportunity to start your fiscal career at L&I!

In this position, you will use independent judgment to interpret and apply agency and Office of Financial Management (OFM) policies and state regulations (RCWs and WACs) to ensure transaction processing complies with all requirements, reducing agency audit risk and enhancing L&I’s ability to produce accurate financial statements. This will contribute to the successful close of each fiscal year.

Who we are:

The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I)’s Financial Management Division comprises six units that contribute to maintaining the financial integrity of the agency. Our work directly supports our five agency goals and our mission “To Keep Washington Safe and Working.”

Within the Financial Services Program, our Fiscal Technicians support functions such as Cashiering, Warrant Handling, Capital Asset Management, Accounts Payable, Electronic Benefit Payments, and Accounts Receivable. This position will support all these functions by being cross-functional between units to balance workload peaks and valleys.

We are a dynamic team committed to being customer-focused, offering learning and development opportunities, and maintaining a positive work-life balance. We are dedicated to a values-based culture and a growth mindset.

Here is what we are looking for:
  • An effective communicator who can present ideas clearly and concisely in formal and informal situations.
  • Ability to work well with others and contribute to the unit-wide workload.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Internet; capable of creating, modifying, and working with formulas, functions, formatting, and printing documents and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously, manage interruptions, and return to incomplete tasks.
  • Ability to review, audit, and accurately process financial transactions.
  • Effective collaboration with both accounting and non-accounting personnel.
  • Strong customer service skills to build and maintain satisfaction by sharing accurate and timely information.
  • Complete warrant cancellation, re-issue, and re-mail processes for all programs.
  • Prepare affidavits for lost, destroyed, forged, or statute-limited warrants.
  • Process affidavits returned by customers and handle returned warrants as instructed.
  • Process travel reimbursement requests and electronically file receipts.
  • Reconcile purchase card transactions ensuring compliance with state regulations.
  • Enter financial data into various electronic systems.
  • Review and process vendor payments, including for rentals, utilities, leases, and goods/services.
  • Interpret OFM rules and regulations in resolving accounts payable issues.
  • Prepare financial records for retention.
  • Process all payment requests, including Attorney General bills, court fees, and contracts.
  • Exercise independent judgment to ensure proper posting and recording of transactions, and correct errors as needed.
  • And other related duties.
Minimum qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 18 months of relevant work experience
Preferred qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
