Job description

Our Mission: Keep Washington Safe and Working!
Our Values: Customer Focus, One L&I, Respect, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Learning and Growth, Reliability

Please Note: This recruitment represents two open positions.

Do you have a passion for accounting, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail? Do you want to work in a customer-focused environment that thrives on data integrity? If so, this is a great opportunity to start your fiscal career at L&I!

In this position, you will use independent judgment to interpret and apply agency and Office of Financial Management (OFM) policies and state regulations (RCWs and WACs) to ensure transaction processing complies with all requirements, reducing agency audit risk and supporting accurate financial statements. This will contribute to the successful closing of each fiscal year.

Who we are:

The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I)’s Financial Management Division consists of six units that maintain the financial integrity of the agency. Our work directly supports our five agency goals and our mission to “Keep Washington Safe and Working.”

Within the Financial Services Program, our Fiscal Technicians support functions such as Cashiering, Warrant Handling, Capital Asset Management, Accounts Payable, Electronic Benefit Payments, and Accounts Receivable. This role will support all these functions by being cross-functional to balance workload peaks and valleys.

We are a dynamic team committed to customer focus, learning and development, and maintaining a positive work-life balance. We foster a values-based culture and growth mindset.

Here is what we are looking for:

  • An effective communicator capable of presenting ideas clearly in formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to collaborate well with others and contribute to the team’s workload.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Internet use, including creating, modifying, and working with formulas and functions in documents and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, manage interruptions, and resume incomplete tasks efficiently.
  • Experience in reviewing, auditing, and accurately processing financial transactions.
  • Effective working relationships with both accounting and non-accounting personnel.
  • Strong customer service skills to maintain internal and external satisfaction by providing accurate and timely information.
  • Perform warrant cancellation, re-issue, and re-mail processes for all programs.
  • Prepare affidavits for lost, destroyed, forged, or statute-expired warrants.
  • Process affidavits returned by customers and handle returned warrants as instructed.
  • Manage travel reimbursement requests and electronically file receipts.
  • Process purchase card transactions in compliance with state regulations, reconcile receipts, logs, and statements.
  • Enter financial data into electronic systems.
  • Review and process vendor payments, including rent, utilities, leases, and goods/services.
  • Interpret OFM rules and regulations for accounts payable issues.
  • Prepare financial records for retention.
  • Handle all payment requests, including bills for attorney fees, court costs, and contracts.
  • Exercise independent judgment to ensure proper posting of accounts payable transactions, correct errors, and record transactions accurately in the general ledger.
  • And other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 18 months of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
