Job description

Our Mission and Values

Keep Washington Safe and Working! Our Values: Customer Focus, One L&I, Respect, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Learning and Growth, Reliability

Make Safety Make Sense. Create Learning That Makes a Difference.

Do you have a strong background in workplace safety and a knack for making complex information easy to understand? Are you passionate about helping people learn, solving problems, and putting safer practices into action?

The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), is looking for a safety and health professional who can turn technical expertise into engaging, practical learning experiences that make a real difference in Washington workplaces.

As the Occupational Safety & Health Professional in DOSH’s Consultation, Education & Outreach program, you’ll combine your occupational safety knowledge with clear communication, creative thinking, and an interest in how people learn. You’ll develop digital education, training materials, presentations, and outreach resources that help employers and workers understand safety requirements and, more importantly, put them into practice.

This is your opportunity to do more than explain the rules. You’ll help people build safer habits, recognize hazards, and make better decisions that protect workers across Washington.

In addition to the base salary

Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

At the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I), our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is on a mission to keep Washington's workers safe and healthy. We administer the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) Chapter 49.17 RCW, by developing and enforcing workplace safety and health standards that protect workers from hazardous job conditions.

We value our employees and their work-life balance by encouraging flexible schedules. This position can be offered with a flexible schedule (4/10’s, 5/8’s etc.) once fully trained and approved by management.

This position is mostly teleworking with occasional travel throughout the state for outreach events. Is permitted on occasion dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty can be in any of our L&I locations Statewide.

Learn more about DOSH here: 50 Years of DOSH.

Some of what you will do
  • Turn technical information into practical learning. Develop engaging PowerPoint presentations, eLearning courses, online resources, fact sheets, hazard alerts, and other educational materials that make workplace safety requirements easier to understand and apply.
  • Make safety information accessible. Translate complex regulations and technical concepts into plain language, using clear, organized, and visually engaging content that connects with diverse audiences.
  • Put safety knowledge into action. Apply your understanding of workplace hazards, prevention strategies, and safety programs to create resources that help employers and workers recognize risks and implement effective controls.
  • Explore how people learn. Use your experience, skills, or interest in instructional design to develop learning experiences that hold attention, improve understanding, and encourage safer workplace behaviors.
  • Be a trusted technical resource. Research emerging safety issues, interpret applicable DOSH and OSHA requirements, verify technical accuracy, and help ensure educational materials provide reliable, practical guidance.
  • Collaborate to make an impact. Work with DOSH colleagues, other L&I programs, employers, industry associations, and labor organizations to develop and share useful safety and health information.
  • Help lead safety initiatives. Contribute to statewide and nationwide safety campaigns, outreach activities, presentations, and other efforts that promote safer workplaces.
  • And other impactful work that supports our mission.

Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate.

What makes you a great fit?

You bring a strong foundation in occupational safety and health, with an emphasis on workplace safety, and you know how to connect technical information to real‑world situations. You can look at a complex regulation, hazard, or safety process and explain it in a way that makes sense to someone who needs to use that information on the job.

  • Has experience with instructional design, skills in developing effective learning materials, or a genuine interest in learning how to create engaging educational experiences.
  • Can develop well‑organized, visually appealing content that is easy to navigate and follow.
  • Uses sound judgment, research, and problem‑solving skills to develop practical solutions to safety and health challenges.
  • Works well with others, builds productive relationships, and communicates effectively with people who have different backgrounds and levels of technical knowledge.
  • Is comfortable using technology to develop and deliver digital learning and educational resources.
REQUIRED:
  • A valid and unrestricted driver's license.
  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
And one of the following:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or closely related field AND two years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience.
  • Four years of full‑time journey level paid occupational/industrial safety related experience in a government, military, or public health work environment.

*Additional safety and health qualifying experience will substitute year for year, for education.

DESIRED:

Additional qualifications that will help you stand out

  • Experience developing educational content, training presentations, or other safety and health outreach materials.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, adult learning, or eLearning development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, and experience with digital learning tools such as Articulate.
  • Ability to interpret and apply workplace safety regulations and communicate technical requirements to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong problem‑solving, presentation, facilitation, and collaboration skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or other languages spoken in Washington state. Bilingual preferred; persons of all languages are encouraged to apply. Bilingual jobs include a 5% salary increase for dual language responsibilities.
