Job summary

Philadelphia Zoo is seeking a KZU Assistant, a scheduled part-time non-supervisor role. Under the KidZooU Curator, you will assist with animal care and educational activities, helping with exhibit maintenance and daily reporting.

The role requires a biology/animal science degree or experience with exotic animals, strong communication, and the ability to work with a diverse team. Weekend availability is expected; benefits include competitive pay and family membership perks.

Qualifications

  • Degree from two-year or four-year college in biology, animal science or related field, or minimum one-year experience with exotic animals and livestock.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well with a large and diverse team.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching teens.
  • Ability to speak comfortably and present lively demonstrations to large audiences.
  • Ability and desire to expand animal husbandry skills and knowledge.
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Power Point and Access)
  • Must be flexible in work days and hours, weekend days will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction of KidZooU Keepers, assists with a variety of animal husbandry duties including, but not limited to, maintaining and cleaning exhibit areas, enclosures, cages, furnishings and equipment. With keeper’s mentorship, may be included in observing, reporting and recording animal health and behavior, filling out daily reports, maintaining KZU animal records, grooming, nail trims, and wing clips as needed, administering medication per instruction, participating in animal capture, crating and transfers.
  • Under direction of KidZooU Keepers, participates in and assists with implementation of KidZooU enrichment and training programs.
  • Interprets activities in public areas while working with animals.
  • Assists with maintenance of KidZooU grounds, facilities and equipment.
  • Answers questions and provides information to visitors in a manner which is welcoming and encourages repeat visits; handles complaints and resolves problems in a manner which is helpful, polite, and accurate. Looks for opportunities to be helpful to visitors and other employees
  • Reports to work as scheduled; uses appropriate procedures when reporting lateness or absence; maintains excellent attendance record.

Classification: PART-TIME (32 hours/week)

Physical and Medical Requirements:

  • Excellent physical condition with no history of problems related to cardiovascular, respiratory or skeletal systems prior to beginning work.
  • No significant impairment of visual or auditory ability.
  • No history of allergies to animals or plants which might impair ability to work.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift heavy objects and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Must be willing to get a rabies inoculation series and be TB tested annually.
