Job description

Overview

What does a great Kubernetes Container Platform Engineer (PaaS & CaaS) do? This role focuses on Kubernetes platforms and infrastructure as code automation. You will work with the engineering team on infrastructure and consuming public cloud infrastructure to support self-service automation and orchestration.

You will perform activities related to VMware/Pivotal BOSH operations and Kubernetes Container Platform Administration and operations, client onboarding, upgrades and changes. You will also participate in globalizing the Platform Services offering and standardizing platform deployments across the enterprise.

The container platform engineer builds and maintains the primary platform services needed to support the full lifecycle of container platforms and to ease consumption of those services by our community of 20,000+ developers and DevOps teams. You will be part of a small, agile team of architects and engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement and operate container services platforms with a focus on integrating these platforms with other tools using CI/CD pipelines.
  • Use automation to improve efficiency; automate repetitive tasks and reduce manual work.
  • Assess and manage risk, balancing thoroughness with task efficiency.
  • Analyze, diagnose, replicate, solve and resolve technical issues reported by customers using PaaS and CaaS platforms.
  • Write maintainable, reusable software and design for self-service from the consumer perspective.
  • Advance unresolved issues that require deeper knowledge in a timely manner.
  • Take ownership of and maintain status on support requests from business unit customers.
  • Report and document product defects and collaborate with other engineering teams to triage issues.
  • Build and peer review knowledgebase articles and product documentation.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrated competency in programming/scripting with a strong preference for Go and Python.
  • Experience designing and implementing Infrastructure as Code APIs using interface definition tools like Swagger.
  • Strong understanding of virtual computing environments and concepts such as hypervisors and load balancing.
  • Understanding of identity management, access management, and certificate management (hands-on preferred).
  • Experience designing and implementing containerized infrastructure logging and observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Fluentd/Fluent Bit, Prometheus/Grafana/Alertmanager, Wavefront, AppDynamics).
  • Experience with .NET Core and .NET Framework.
  • Experience with Open Policy Agent or other policy engines.
  • Basic qualifications: 4-year college degree + 3 years of related experience, or a sophisticated degree with 4 years of proven experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience building and maintaining container platforms such as Client/TAS (Pivotal Application Service, Tanzu Application Service), PKS/TKGI (Pivotal Kubernetes Services, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid), or IBM Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and supporting Kubernetes on at least one public IaaS provider (Azure, AWS, GCP, Alibaba).
