Organization: The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for a Kitchen Supervisor at the Abilene Corps, located in Abilene, Texas.

Job Summary

Plans, directs, and supervises the work of assigned staff; cooks and serves nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules; ensures all meals are prepared and served in a safe and presentable manner; cleans kitchen facilities, equipment, and appliances; maintains inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of proper cooking methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of effective cleaning and sanitizing practices, including proper safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of acceptable food storage and cleaning techniques.
  • Ability to cook nutritional, tasteful, and safe food for large groups in a timely manner.
  • Ability to properly clean kitchen appliances and utensils.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to motivate, lead, supervise, and evaluate subordinate staff and volunteers.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or G.E.D. and two to three years of experience cooking for large groups, with at least one year of supervisory experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to cook, taste, and smell food.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Work performed standing, with occasional sitting, squatting, climbing, bending, and walking.
  • Frequent physical effort, including walking, standing, lifting, and carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Work environment is a kitchen within a shelter, with physical discomforts related to temperature changes and cooking activities.
