Job summary

Highgate Hotels’ Monterey Beach Hotel in Monterey, CA is seeking a Kitchen Steward/Cleaner to manage dishwashing and sustain sanitation across all Food and Beverage areas.

You will operate dishwashing equipment, restock inventory, follow safety procedures, and maintain clean, orderly kitchens; flexibility with long hours and a customer‑service mindset are required.

Responsibilities

• Operate the dishwashing equipment to ensure proper cleaning of china, glass, and silver and maintain sanitation.
• Return clean items to storage, minimizing breakage during handling.
• Knowledge of safe handling techniques for all chemicals used in the kitchen.
• Sweep and mop and organize the entire Kitchen area, including sinks and equipment.
• Manually wash and scrub pots and pans as needed.
• Ensure dispensers are fully stocked with paper, soap and sanitizer.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness in all kitchens and utility areas.
• Empty trash and keep cans clean; assist in cafe areas as needed.
• Adhere to safety standards, policies, and procedures; attend trainings.
• Maintain regular attendance and contribute to a cooperative team environment.

Overview

The Kitchen Steward/Cleaner is responsible for the cleaning operation in all Food and Beverage areas, and is also expected to to maintain an acceptable level of sanitation and cleanliness throughout the Food and Beverage areas, in accordance with the Department of Environmental & Health Services.

Responsibilities

• Operate the dishwashing equipment to ensure that all china, glass, and silver are cleaned thoroughly and sanitation of such is maintained.
• Return all clean china, glass, and silver to its proper storage location using care to minimize breakage.
• Knowledge of proper safe handling techniques for all chemicals used.
• Sweep and Mop and assure organization of the entire Kitchen area including: sinks, ice machine, soap and sanitizers
• Manually wash and scrub all pots and pans.
• Ensure all dispensers are fully stock of paper, soap and sanitizer.
• Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and orderliness in all kitchens and utility work areas.
• Wash tile floors in all food and beverage areas.
• Empty trash and keep cans clean.
• Responsible for placing and removing cafe food in associate cafe.
• Ensure dispensers in cafe are fully stocked.
• Comply with all Loss Prevention guidelines.
• Sweep and mop floor. Keep floors clean and dry; clean up wet spills immediately.
• Comply and assure compliance with all safety standards by following all safety rules and procedures.
• Attend meetings/training as required by management.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent and/or experience in a hotel or related field preferred.
• Flexible and long hours required at times.
• Heavy work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
• Ability to stand during entire shift.
• Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times.
• Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and written, with all level of employees and guests in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service oriented manner.
• Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying concerns raised by employees and guests.
• Must be able to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.
• Approach all encounters with guests and employees in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service-oriented manner.
• Attend all hotel required meetings and trainings.
• Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Highgate Hotel Standards, as required by scheduling, which will vary according to the needs of the hotel.
• Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, which includes wearing the proper uniform and nametag.
• Comply with Highgate Hotel Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.
• Maximize efforts towards productivity, identify problem areas and assist in implementing solutions.
• Must be effective in handling problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying and solving problems as necessary.
• Must be able to understand and apply complex information, data, etc. from various sources to meet appropriate objectives.
• Must be able to cross-train in other hotel related areas.
• Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information.
• Must be able to show initiative, including anticipating guest or operational needs.
