Honoka‘a Hospital is seeking a Kitchen Helper to support the Dietary team in delivering safe, nutritious meals to patients, residents, and staff. You will assist with food preparation, plating, tray assembly and service in a fast-paced hospital environment.

This position emphasizes teamwork, cleanliness and adherence to food safety standards to ensure high-quality meals while supporting daily hospital operations in East Hawaiʻi Island.

Qualifications

  • Desired Skills: Basic knowledge of food preparation, kitchen safety, and sanitation; ability to learn equipment operation; ability to follow instructions and work in a team; strong cleanliness and organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily food preparation including washing and cutting vegetables, salads, desserts, fruits, beverages and snacks per diet orders.
  • Assist in assembling and delivering patient meal trays and food carts to patient areas.
  • Support cafeteria service by working at the steam table and serving meals.
  • Maintain patient census and diet order information to minimize waste.
  • Wash and sanitize dishes, pots, pans and utensils; operate dishwashing machine and keep areas clean.
  • Adhere to food safety, sanitation, confidentiality, hospital policies and regulatory requirements while teamwork.

As a Kitchen Helper, you’ll play an important role in ensuring patients, residents, and employees receive safe, nutritious, and well-prepared meals each day. Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with daily food preparation, including cleaning and cutting vegetables, preparing salads, desserts, fruits, beverages, snacks, and foods according to patient diet orders and required food consistencies.
  • Help assemble and deliver patient meal trays and food carts, ensuring meals are prepared accurately and delivered to the appropriate patient/resident areas.
  • Support cafeteria food service, including working at the steam table and assisting with serving meals.
  • Maintain accurate patient census and diet order information to help ensure appropriate quantities are prepared and minimize food waste.
  • Wash and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen equipment; operate the commercial dishwashing machine and routinely clean kitchen appliances and work areas.
  • Follow food safety, sanitation, confidentiality, hospital policies, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements while working cooperatively with the Dietary team.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
