Job summary

Corewell Health is seeking a part-time healthcare interpreter to provide accurate oral interpretation for LEP patients, families, and staff across in-person, phone, and video modalities throughout the hospital and clinics. This role supports effective communication by relaying medical information and adhering to policies, standards, and ethics.

It also assists with training interns and explains hospital resources and protocols.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year of relevant experience providing interpreting/translating services in a health care setting.
• CRT-Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) certification by CCHI within 180 days.

Responsibilities

• Provides interpreting and translation services in accordance with Corewell Health policies and procedures and the National Council on Interpreters in Healthcare (NCIHC) Code of Ethics governing the profession of interpretation.
• Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to physicians, staff, and patients, to contribute to successful outcomes.
• Assists with onboarding and training of new staff by providing shadowing opportunities and instruction in healthcare interpretation, HIPAA compliance, interpreter’s code of ethics, cultural competence, and all assigned department functions.
• Maintains professional certification and qualifications by completing required training, continuing education credits, and adhering to renewal deadlines.
• Ability to interpret over-the-phone or via video for long periods of time. Ability to walk extensively throughout the workday.
• Maintains assignment log for documentation purposes.
• Supports office operations by handling phone calls, scheduling and confirming appointments, performing data entry, maintaining records and databases, and assisting with special projects as needed.

The role ensures effective communication by relaying medical information between English and other languages in accordance with organizational policies, national standards, and the NCIHC code of ethics. The interpreter also assists with on-the-job training and mentoring of interns, explains hospital resources and protocols, makes appropriate referrals, and serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers. Duties are performed in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation, with additional responsibilities as required to support the department.
