Teacher Assistant (Paraprofessional)
Benton Harbor Area Schools – Benton Harbor, MI
Position Summary

The Teacher Assistant supports high-quality instruction and student supervision in elementary classrooms. Under the direction of the classroom teacher and building administrator, this role assists with small-group/individual instruction, behavior support, and daily operations to ensure a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide targeted academic support (literacy and math) through small-group and one-to-one instruction aligned to lesson objectives and Michigan standards.
  • Implement teacher-designed interventions and accommodations; collect and log student progress data.
  • Support classroom management routines, positive behavior strategies, and transitions (arrival/dismissal, lunch, recess).
  • Prepare instructional materials, set up learning centers, and operate classroom technology.
  • Supervise students to ensure safety and adherence to school expectations in classrooms, halls, cafeteria, and playground.
  • Assist with assessments (setup, scribing, make-ups) per teacher/admin guidance.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, students, and families while maintaining confidentiality (FERPA).
  • Participate in required trainings, PLC/grade-level meetings, and professional learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support building needs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: At least 2 years of college (minimum 60 semester credits) from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience working with elementary-age students in school, childcare, camp, or youth programs.
  • Skills:
    • Clear, compassionate communication and strong teamwork.
    • Reliability, punctuality, and ability to follow instructional plans.
    • Basic proficiency with computers/Chromebooks and classroom tech.
Preferred Qualifications (Bonus)
  • Associate’s degree or Michigan paraprofessional/MTTC qualification pathway.
  • Experience supporting MTSS/interventions, reading groups, or math fact fluency.
  • CPI/restorative practices training; experience with students with IEPs/504s.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
Work Schedule & Conditions
  • Full-time school year; standard school hours with occasional PD/training.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and light lifting (up to ~25 lbs); outdoor supervision in varied weather.
Reports To

Building Principal and assigned Classroom Teacher.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $15–$20/hour commensurate with experience and education.
  • Eligible district benefits per board policy/collective provisions (if applicable).
Employment Requirements
  • Successful background check and fingerprinting per Michigan law.
  • Completion of district onboarding and required trainings.
