Job summary

Qualifications

• Obtain a HS diploma or the equivalent.
• Be a resident of St. Clair County within six months of appointment, a U.S. citizen, and resident of Illinois within 90 days of appointment.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Possess strong time management and organization skills.
• Possess a valid Driver’s License.
• Considerable knowledge of security procedures and techniques.

Responsibilities

• Transport residents via passenger vehicles to courts, jails, prisons, medical centers, and other specified locations.
• Maintain safe and secure transport of juveniles as directed.

TRANSPORTION OFFICER

The Transportation Officer is appointed by the Director of Court Services and Probation with the approval of the Chief Circuit Judge and has a Shift Supervisor or Acting Shift Supervisor as his/her immediate supervisor. At the discretion of the Director the appointee will serve a six-month probationary period.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Transportation Officer will include, but not be limited to the following:

• Be available to assume and discharge the traditional duties or responsibilities of a detention officer as determined by management.
• Provide supervision, guidance, care, transportation, and secure custody for youth held in detention.
• Encourage appropriate behavior of residents through positive verbal communication.
• Intervene in the event of an infraction of established rules and regulation.
• In crisis situations, respond accordingly using the least physical force necessary and re-establish direct contact with the youth upon stabilization of the situation.
• Maintain safe and secure transport of juveniles as directed.
• Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff.
• Attend and participate in staff meetings and/or training programs as assigned by the Superintendent.
• Demonstrate support for fellow employees during the performance of the job.
• Maintain ability to work without supervision, but also possess ability to take direction or supervision and utilize a team approach to working with residents, detention officers, and other probation and court services personnel.
• Transport residents via passenger vehicles to various destinations such as courts, jails, prisons, medical centers, and other specified locations.
• Executes all aspects of the trip/run including inspection/exchanging information, search of the vehicle and security items, determination of amount and types of restraints, planning special security precautions, accommodation of needs of residents, and inspection and storage of resident’s person.

QUALIFICATIONS

All applicants for the position of Transportation Officer must minimally meet the following qualifications for appointment:

• Obtain a H.S diploma or the equivalent.
• Have no prior felony convictions and suspended felony imposition cases.
• Be a resident of St. Clair County within six months of appointment, a U.S. citizen, and resident of Illinois within 90 days of appointment.
• Must be 21 years of age or upwards.
• Possess strong time management and organization skills.
• Possess a valid Driver’s License
• Considerable knowledge of security procedures and techniques.
• Considerable knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Considerable knowledge of the techniques of self-defense, disturbance controls, firearms, detection of weapons, restraint application, escape, radio communication and emergency procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of various offender sub-cultures, problems, behavior and mental illness, as well as intervention techniques.
