Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Junior Software Engineer to help develop radar, electronic warfare, and communication technologies for national defense. We are seeking a software engineer that will help us develop next generation radar, electronic warfare, and communications technologies for ship, air, ground mobile, and space applications. As a member of the Sensor Modeling and Realtime Software Section within the Sensor Technologies Group, you'll be joining a multi-disciplined team, that is advancing the state-of-the-art. As a Junior Software Engineer, you will...
  • Participate in teams to architect and develop innovative applications including advanced signal processing, complex control software, user interfaces, and embedded applications. You will also work with staff and sponsors to conceive, develop, and validate the concepts needed to enable future air and missile defense systems that will be essential to the nation’s defense.
  • Work in a variety of teams to build new applications, algorithms, software, user-interfaces, etc.
  • Participate in the full software life cycle; defining requirements, architecting processing flow, developing algorithms, integrating with experimental hardware, and testing.
  • Research and experiment with new programming technologies and explore creative new applications for software technologies.
  • Collaborate with experts across the field to research novel techniques and solve complex multi-disciplined challenges.
Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Have 3 years of experience in software development/engineering, preferably with experience in object-oriented programming.
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Are willing and able to travel occasionally to attend meetings or test events at government or contractor sites.
  • Can obtain an Interim Secret clearance prior to starting and are able to obtain a final Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Have an MS or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Have 5+ years of experience in software development/engineering in object-oriented programming
  • Have demonstrated software architecture development experience in complex sensor systems.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign‑on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑term disability, long‑term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
