Job summary

Commonwealth of Virginia seeks an Assistant Public Defender I in Fredericksburg to advocate for indigent clients in criminal cases. The attorney will interview clients, file motions, and represent adults and juveniles in various stages of litigation, reporting to the Chief Public Defender of the Fredericksburg office.

The position requires a J.D. and Virginia Bar admission, a valid driver’s license, and a commitment to public service. At-will employment; fingerprint background check is required.

Qualifications

• J.D. and Virginia State Bar admission are required.
• Willingness to try cases and pursue trial advocacy.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to all courts and regional jails.

Responsibilities

• Interview clients and witnesses and coordinate with staff investigators.
• File pretrial and post-trial motions, litigate motions, and handle appeal issues.
• Try cases in General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts.
