Job summary

Hewitt Young in Syracuse, NY is seeking a Junior Estimator to support the estimating team under a Sr Estimator. The role focuses on takeoffs, bid documentation, and pricing inputs while developing skills toward independent estimating.

You will participate in training programs, work with HY estimating software, and contribute to organized bid packages and project turnover. This is an hourly, on-site position offering growth opportunities within the estimating academy.

Responsibilities

• Review bid documents, drawings, and specs to complete takeoffs and estimate components.
• Support estimators and Sr Estimator in assembling estimates and proposals.
• Request, organize, and vet vendor quotes for assigned scopes.
• Prepare hand-off documentation and assist with project turnover to PM.
• Participate in HY Estimating Academy and apply feedback from reviews.
• Maintain accurate estimating data, bid logs, and project files in HY systems.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks with senior team members.

Junior Estimator

The Junior Estimator builds the foundation for winning work. Working under the guidance of a Sr Estimator, this role supports the estimating team with accurate takeoffs, organized bid documentation, and reliable pricing inputs, while developing the skills to produce complete, competitive estimates independently.

Core Responsibilities

• Review bid documents, drawings, and specifications to complete assigned takeoffs and estimate components.
• Support Estimators and the Sr Estimator in assembling estimates and proposals that follow HY estimating standards.
• Request, organize, and vet vendor and supplier quotes for assigned scopes.
• Prepare hand-off documentation and assist with project turnover to Project Management.
• Participate in HY Estimating Academy training and apply feedback from estimate reviews to future work.
• Maintain accurate estimating data, bid logs, and project files in HY systems.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks alongside senior team members to build scope and field awareness.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of electrical construction, materials, and installation methods (field background preferred).
• Proficiency with, or ability to quickly learn, HY’s estimating software and takeoff tools.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications accurately.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through on assigned work.
• Clear communicator who asks questions early and is receptive to coaching and feedback.
