Job summary

SDC - Structural Design Concepts in Waconia, MN is seeking a Junior Truss Designer to join our design team. You will assist in developing accurate roof and floor truss designs for residential and light commercial projects, while learning MiTek software, construction practices, and building codes under the guidance of experienced designers.

You will prepare layouts and drawings based on architectural plans, interpret project requirements, and contribute to compliant, cost-effective designs.

Qualifications

• Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent experience in drafting, design, construction, engineering technology, or a related field.

Responsibilities

Working alongside experienced designers, this role builds knowledge of truss design, MiTek software, construction practices, and applicable building codes while providing timely, quality support to internal teams and customers.**RESPONSIBILITIES:****Truss Design and Technical Development*** Assist with designing residential and light commercial roof and floor truss systems using MiTek software, with guidance from experienced designers.* Prepare truss layouts, drawings, and related documentation based on architectural plans and project specifications.* Learn to interpret architectural and engineering plans to identify project requirements and potential design challenges.* Apply established design standards, company procedures, and applicable building codes to support accurate and compliant designs.* Make design revisions and updates based on feedback from senior designers, sales team members, and project managers.* Develop an understanding of truss design principles, material utilization, structural integrity, and cost-effective design practices.**Collaboration and Communication*** Work closely with experienced designers, sales team members, and project managers to support timely and accurate completion of projects.* Communicate questions, project concerns, and potential discrepancies to the appropriate team members.* Assist with reviewing project plans and identifying missing information or inconsistencies that may affect the design process.* Participate in training and knowledge-sharing opportunities to build technical expertise and industry knowledge.* Provide professional and responsive support to internal team members and customers, escalating technical questions as needed.**Learning and Continuous Improvement*** Develop proficiency in MiTek truss design software and other applicable computer programs.* Learn residential and light commercial construction practices, truss manufacturing processes, and relevant building codes.* Incorporate feedback from experienced designers to improve accuracy, efficiency, and overall design quality.* Maintain organized project files, drawings, and documentation.* Develop the ability to manage assigned projects and design tasks with increasing independence as knowledge and experience grow.## Qualifications* Associate degree, technical certificate, relevant coursework, or equivalent experience in drafting, design, construction, engineering technology, or a related field preferred.* Basic computer skills and willingness to learn specialized design software, including MiTek.* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, or construction plans, or a demonstrated willingness to develop this skill.* Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.* Good analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.* Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.* Ability to work collaboratively with a team and accept coaching and constructive feedback.* Self-motivated, dependable, and eager to learn and develop technical expertise.* Previous experience in construction, drafting, lumber, or the truss industry is preferred but not required.**PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*** Sit for extended periods of time.* Frequent use of hands, fingers, and eyes when operating a computer, keyboard, monitor, and phone.**ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:*** Primarily an indoor office environment.* Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures during job-site visits.* Some travel may be required to SBL locations, events, and job sites.**LICENSE(S) AND/OR CERTIFICATE(S):*** Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
