Capital Power in Washington, DC, seeks a Senior Specialist to provide expert market analysis for investment, asset management, and trading decisions. You will forecast prices, project asset gross margins, and deliver decision-ready recommendations to senior leadership.

Responsibilities include owning long-term North American power forecasts, defending market assumptions, leading dispatch modeling and proformas, and delivering strategic insights to commercial and trading teams.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Commerce.
  • 5+ years of experience in North American power and gas markets.
  • Demonstrated experience forecasting wholesale electricity prices and asset revenues.
  • Ability to translate market dynamics into actionable business recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Own long-term fundamental power market forecasts for assigned regions.
  • Review and defend market assumptions including supply, demand, fuel prices, and policy impacts.
  • Lead asset-level gross margin projections, dispatch modeling, and proformas.
  • Support business development and expansion initiatives with forecasts and due diligence.
  • Provide market insights to commercial and trading teams for hedging and contracting.
  • Manage external consultants and interpret results for leadership.
  • Prepare presentations for cross-functional and executive audiences.
  • Monitor regulatory and market design developments and incorporate into projections.
  • Design and implement company-wide market dashboards.

Job description

Reporting to the Head of Energy Markets, this role provides expert analysis and market insight to support Capital Power’s investment, asset management, commercial, and trading decisions. This role is accountable for market price forecasts, asset gross margin projections, and strategic market assessments across assigned North American power markets. The Senior Specialist leads modeling efforts, directs consultant/internal work, and delivers clear, decision‑ready recommendations to senior leadership.

You Will Contribute to Our Team By:
  • Owning long‑term fundamental power market forecasts (energy, capacity, ancillary services, and environmental products) for assigned regions.
  • Reviewing, developing, and defending key market assumptions including supply, demand, fuel prices, emissions pricing, policy impacts, and cost of new entry (CONE).
  • Leading asset‑level gross margin projections, dispatch modeling, and financial proformas to support budgeting, long‑term planning, and project valuations.
  • Supporting business development and expansion initiatives by delivering price forecasts, dispatch analysis, and due diligence assessments for new investments.
  • Providing strategic market insights to Commercial and Supply & Trading teams to support origination, hedging, and contracting strategies.
  • Managing external consultants, including scope definition, assumption review, quality control, and interpretation of results.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations and briefings to cross‑functional teams, senior management and executive teams on market outlooks, risks, and opportunities.
  • Monitoring regulatory, policy, and market design developments, assessing their commercial, financial impacts and incorporating their implications into price projections.
  • Designing and implementing market dashboards for consumption across the company.
What You Will Bring to the Role:
Education and Experience
  • Degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Commerce.
  • Master’s degree or professional designation (or progress toward one) is an asset.
  • 5+ years of experience in North American power and gas markets.
  • Demonstrated experience forecasting wholesale electricity prices and asset revenues.
  • Proven ability to translate complex market dynamics into actionable business recommendations.
Technical & Professional Skills
  • Advanced quantitative and financial modeling skills (CONE, LCOE, dispatch, gross margin).
  • Strong understanding of power market structures and regulatory frameworks.
  • Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including executive‑level presentations.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Python and data analysis tools; exposure to market models is an asset.

The pay range for this position is $117,000 – $169,000 USD.

The specific rate will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and prior relevant experience. This position is eligible for health care benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, and annual bonus.
