Job summary

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) seeks an experienced Journey Auto Mechanic for the Complex Central Prep Shop in Taylorsville, UT. You will keep fleet including snowplows and heavy equipment operating safely by diagnosing, repairing, and testing vehicles.

You must have at least four years of mechanic experience, a valid Class A CDL (or ability to obtain within a year), and be able to provide your own tool set.

Qualifications

• Minimum 4 years of professional mechanic experience.
• CDL Class A required or ability to obtain within 1 year.
• State Inspection certificate or ability to obtain within 1 year.
• Must provide your own full set of mechanic tools.
• Willing to work varied schedules including overtime.

Responsibilities

• Install components necessary for vehicle operation and keep Utah moving.
• Use diagnostic tools to identify and fix mechanical issues, including overhauls and adjustments.
• Install, route, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform welding, brazing, cutting, and general fabrication.
• Road-test vehicles before and after service.
• Order parts, manage paperwork, transport vehicles to vendors/up-fitters.

Journey Auto Mechanic

Are you an experienced mechanic who takes pride in high-quality work? The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a self-motivated professional to join our Complex Central (Taylorsville) Prep Shop!

As a Journey Auto Mechanic, you will ensure our fleet-including snowplows, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy and light duty equipment-operates safely and efficiently. You will primarily work in our shop, up-fitting, testing and preparing vehicles and equipment for service. You may also be involved in the disposition of said equipment at the end of its life cycle, as well as traveling across the region to deliver light-heavy duty trucks and equipment to and from different vendors and up-fitters.

Wage Information

Starting at $27.06 per hour, with higher offers based on your specific experience.

About the Role

FT/PT Status: Full Time

Background Check: You must successfully pass a criminal history check.

Drug Test: Yes, pre-employment and random after hire.

Current CDL Holders: Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.

Key Responsibilities

• Install components that are necessary for a vehicle to allow UDOT employees to complete their tasks and to "Keep Utah Moving".
• Use diagnostic tools to identify and fix mechanical issues, including overhauls and adjustments.
• Install, route, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform welding, brazing, cutting, and general fabrication as needed for operations.
• Road-test vehicles before and after service to ensure they meet operational and safety standards.
• Order parts, manage paperwork requirements, track work performed, and transport vehicles and equipment to and from vendors and up-fitters.

Qualifications

• At least four (4) years of professional mechanic experience. Relevant education may be substituted for experience year-for-year.
• A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 1 year of hire.
• A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 1 year of hire.
• You must provide your own full set of mechanic tools (a tool allowance is provided).
• Must be available 24/7 for overtime and varied schedules, especially during weather events.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

You must be willing to work under the following conditions:

• This is a strenuous role. You must be able to lift over 50 pounds and work in restricted spaces (crawling, crouching, or climbing).
• You will work around heavy machinery and chemicals, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
