Job summary

Novelis is seeking a Joining Engineer Co-Op at its Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, GA for a 6-month summer-fall 2027 term. You will join the Joining and Forming team to plan experiments, qualify joining methods, and document results, working with engineers and technicians in a collaborative environment.

Ideal candidates are enrolled in a four-year engineering program with lab experience in metal joining, metallography, and mechanical testing, and possess strong communication

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a four-year university in relevant engineering fields.
• Hands-on lab or project experience with metal joining, materials processing, or characterization.
• Experience with metallography and mechanical testing.
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Available for approximately 6 months during summer-fall 2027.
• Authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Position Overview

The Joining and Forming team, located at the Novelis Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, Georgia, has an opportunity to participate in our summer 2027 Co-op program. The team is seeking a Joining Engineer Co-Op that can join the team for approximately 6 months. This role is responsible for joining qualification and development by planning and conducting experiments, evaluating results, and documenting research findings.

Responsibilities

• Conduct literature reviews of current joining methods and practices for proposed aluminum material combinations.
• Plan, develop, and optimize aluminum alloy joining processes.
• Conduct laboratory experiments and support operation of joining and materials-characterization equipment.
• Prepare test specimens and perform metallography, mechanical testing, and other relevant characterization.
• Analyze experimental data and interpret results using sound engineering and statistical methods.
• Maintain organized test records and follow applicable laboratory safety and operating procedures.
• Document research findings and communicate results through written reports and technical presentations.
• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, technologists, and technicians supporting product qualification and development.

Minimum qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited four-year university in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on laboratory or project experience with metal joining, materials processing, or materials characterization.
• Experience with metallography and mechanical testing.
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work safely and effectively in a laboratory and team environment.
• Must be available for approximately 6 months during summer-fall 2027.
• Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
• Enrolled in an accredited 4-year University.
• Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer

Preferred qualifications

• Graduate student pursuing a master’s degree or PhD in relevant engineering discipline.
• Hands-on experience with laser welding, resistance spot welding, self-pierce riveting, or related joining processes.
• Experience with electron microscopy or other advanced materials-characterization techniques.
• Experience with design of experiments, statistical data analysis, or process optimization.
• Experience with engineering modeling, simulation, or data-driven methods.
• Knowledge of aluminum alloys, automotive sheet products, or joining metallurgy.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and communicate progress with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated technical communication through conference presentations, publications, project reports, or comparable work.
