Job summary

ARMED SERVICES YMCA of ALASKA seeks a Teacher’s Assistant to support classroom operations in our Alaska program. This role assists the teacher with daily curriculum delivery and maintains a safe, caring environment for children, aligning with state regulations and DOD standards.

Responsibilities include supporting routines, documenting status, communicating with families, and participating in training. Start date is August 24; expect 40 lbs lifting and flexible scheduling.

Qualifications

  • Understand hiring is on a trial basis for 6 months and then re-evaluated.
  • Must successfully complete all required training and certification required by the ASYMCA and DOD guidelines
  • Must successfully pass all background checks to include Installation Record Check, State Check, Fingerprint, CNACI.
  • Very good organizational and time management skills.
  • Must have a positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Resolve conflicts when necessary to ensure a positive experience for everyone and in cooperation with the procedures established by the teacher.

Position Description

Job Title: Teacher’s Assistant

Reports to: Education Director

FLSA Status: Full-Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt

Hourly Pay: $17.03 – $21.05 DOE

Start Date: August 24

Basic Job Purpose

The teacher’s assistant is responsible for maintaining a warm, healthy environment to promote the total growth and well-being of the children in the early education program. The teacher assistant shares with the teacher in the responsibility of nurturing each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth. The teacher’s assistant has the responsibility to assist the teacher as a team member in the daily operation of their classroom by maintaining quality early childhood education and care for all participants and insuring compliance in all state regulations and DOD Standards.

Functions And Duties
  • Program and Services Management
    • Assist the teacher in implementation of daily schedule/curriculum with attention to the needs of the children, including quality, health, safety, and cleanliness of environment beyond minimum regulations and requirements.
    • Inform the teacher immediately when social, mental health, educational or medical services appear necessary for any child in the classroom.
    • Maintain nurturing and responsive interactions with children.
    • Maintain open parent communications including individual or group meetings.
    • Allow flexibility in your position and schedule to ensure quality care.
    • Be prepared to participate in all children’s activities, which include but are not limited to classroom activities, field trips, outdoor play, swim, gym, and family or special organizational events.
    • Lead by example; encourage classroom success through modeling positive behaviors.
    • Resolve conflicts when necessary to ensure a positive experience for everyone and in cooperation with the procedures established by the teacher.
  • Program Tracking
    • Maintain correct statistical data, forms and files on students, when directed by teacher.
  • Facility Management
    • Maintain appropriate classroom hygiene and cleanliness standards- which includes daily cleaning of toys and surfaces.
    • Inform teacher of new equipment needs, maintenance requests and safety concerns.
    • Maintain a healthy classroom environment by monitoring the safety and security of the children.
    • Monitor and provide suggestions to assure playground and classrooms are maintained to the highest standards.
    • Attend staff and training meetings requested by the teacher.
    • Ensures supplies are requested to teacher in a timely manner
    • Report unsafe conditions to teacher. Immediately correct condition, if possible.
    • Other Duties as assigned by supervisors
Working Conditions
  • Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
  • Physical demands are the ability bend and stretch and be on your feet for long periods of time.
Qualifications

Post Hire Requirements
  • Pass and maintain background check requirements as directed by the Armed Services YMCA and DOD
  • Complete Armed Services YMCA new hire training.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record
