Job summary

Kyndryl is seeking a senior developer to modernise COBOL-based mainframe systems by converting of COBOL to Java and delivering cloud-ready Java applications. You will analyse, refactor, and translate business logic while preserving functionality, performance, and data integrity across architectures.

You will collaborate with architects, analysts, modernisation specialists, and testing teams to ensure scalable, maintainable solutions.

Qualifications

• 5-10 years of software development using Java.
• 2+ years of Mainframe development experience.
• Hands-on COBOL-to-Java transformation or modernization experience.
• Experience analyzing large legacy applications and translating business logic into modern architectures.

Responsibilities

• Analyse existing COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and batch apps to understand processes.
• Convert and refactor legacy COBOL code into Java-based applications.
• Translate business logic from mainframe systems into Java microservices and enterprise applications.
• Design, develop, test, and deploy Java applications using modern frameworks and design patterns.
• Participate in application modernisation and digital transformation initiatives.
• Work closely with business users and SMEs to validate functionality and ensure business continuity.
• Identify opportunities to optimise converted code rather than performing straightforward code translation.
• Develop integration solutions between modern Java applications and legacy systems when required.
• Create technical documentation, mapping documents, and conversion guidelines.
• Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.
• Support system integration testing, user acceptance testing, and production deployment activities.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues arising during migration and post‑migration support.
