Job summary

The City of Watauga seeks a dedicated custodian to perform janitorial maintenance across municipal facilities. You will carry out floor care, general cleaning, and routine upkeep while supporting city operations.

Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, a valid Texas driver’s license, and related maintenance experience. The role requires physical effort and reliable attendance, with occasional lifting and event setup duties.

Job description

Scheduled work hours may be Monday – Saturday any time between 5am -12pm, 5am-9am, or 5:30pm – 9:30pm depending on business need

Works under the supervision of the Fleet and Facilities Superintendent performing custodial care and maintenance of City buildings.

  • Performs janitorial maintenance of municipal buildings and other City Facilities.
  • Performs a variety of custodial duties including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing and polishing floors and emptying waste baskets, washing windows, etc.
  • Performs duties such as tile and carpet cleaning, dusting, light bulb replacement, and polishing of furniture.
  • Performs cleaning and maintenance of parking areas, walkways, stairways, elevators, windows, floors, walls, restrooms, conference rooms and lounge areas.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal and maintains walkways and parking lots.
  • Assists in supervising contractors such as carpet cleaners, painters, and pest exterminators.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen and restrooms, replenishes, and maintains supplies including soap dispensers, tissue, and towels.
  • Responds and cleans spills, broken items, etc.
  • Reports to Supervisor of needed supplies to perform his/her duties.
  • May be required to move and lift boxes.
  • Participates in the setup for City events.
  • Keeps records of work performed.
  • Reports to supervisor on status of work orders, material used, and parts needed, etc.
  • Operates a city vehicle as a means of transportation to and from city facilities, and for the delivery and distribution of materials, parts, and supplies needed to complete required tasks.
  • Utilizes man lifts to maintain higher areas of buildings.
  • Works with minimum supervision.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Fleet and Facilities Superintendent.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.
  • May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.

Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to operate assigned equipment and vehicle and to adhere to all safety guidelines. Possible exposure to cleaning chemicals.

  • Knowledge of the standard accepted practices for building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of building maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  • Ability to follow MSDS guidelines and procedures when using various chemicals.
  • Ability to perform the manual labor associated with building maintenance.
  • Ability to use cleaning equipment such as a floor buffer.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities and tasks according to work schedule.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of facilities.
