The Janitor/Custodian is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, orderly, and well-functioning school facilities that support student learning, staff productivity, and community use of district buildings. This position performs routine cleaning, sanitation, minor maintenance, building-security, and event-support duties while maintaining a positive, respectful presence around students, staff, families, and visitors.
The successful candidate will take pride in the appearance and care of Moravia Community School District facilities and will help ensure that all students and staff have a safe, clean, and welcoming environment each day.
The following duties are representative of the position. Additional duties may be assigned as needed by the district.
Clean and maintain classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, locker rooms, entrances, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other assigned areas.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, dust, and disinfect floors, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment.
Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, partitions, floors, dispensers, and fixtures.
Empty trash and recycling containers; transport waste to designated collection areas.
Refill restroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and other needed items.
Clean windows, glass doors, display cases, and other interior surfaces as assigned.
Respond promptly to spills, messes, bodily-fluid incidents, and other sanitation needs using district-approved procedures and personal protective equipment.
Maintain cleaning equipment, supplies, and storage areas in a safe and orderly condition.
Conduct routine inspections of assigned areas and report maintenance, safety, or security concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs, tightening hardware, changing filters, unclogging minor drains, and completing simple repairs within the employee’s training and authority.
Assist with seasonal cleaning, deep cleaning, floor care, waxing, carpet cleaning, and summer maintenance projects.
Help set up, arrange, and take down tables, chairs, bleachers, equipment, and other materials for school activities, athletic events, meetings, concerts, and community functions.
Assist with snow and ice removal, sidewalk treatment, and entryway safety as assigned.
Help maintain exterior entrances, sidewalks, and grounds immediately surrounding school facilities.
Assist with deliveries, moving furniture, and transporting supplies or equipment as needed.
Follow all district safety procedures, chemical-handling requirements, and applicable health and sanitation practices.
Properly use cleaning chemicals, equipment, ladders, tools, and personal protective equipment.
Secure doors, windows, lights, and designated areas according to district procedures.
Immediately report hazards, damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, vandalism, security concerns, or suspected facility issues.
Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, families, and district matters observed during the course of employment.
Support emergency procedures and assist with building readiness during severe weather, fire, evacuation, or other emergency situations.
Communicate respectfully and effectively with students, staff, administrators, families, contractors, and community members.
Maintain a professional, helpful, and service-oriented approach while working in a school environment.
Attend required district meetings, trainings, and safety or compliance programs.
Follow all Moravia Community School District policies, administrative regulations, work rules, and applicable state and federal requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Building Principal, or designee.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Prior custodial, cleaning, maintenance, or building-services experience preferred but not required.
Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions, safety data sheets, product labels, and district procedures.
Ability to safely use common custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor machines, mops, cleaning tools, hand tools, and ladders.
Ability to work independently, prioritize duties, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and the public.
Ability to pass required background checks and meet all district employment requirements.
Valid driver’s license preferred for positions requiring travel between district facilities or use of district vehicles.
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Duties may include:
Standing and walking for extended periods.
Frequently bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs.
Lifting, carrying, moving, or positioning materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, with heavier lifting performed with assistance or appropriate equipment.
Operating floor-cleaning equipment, hand tools, and powered custodial equipment.
Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working around cleaning products, dust, odors, noise, and other conditions commonly associated with custodial and maintenance work.
This position works primarily in school buildings and may also perform duties on school grounds, athletic facilities, storage areas, and other district property. The work schedule may include early morning, daytime, evening, weekend, holiday, summer, or special-event hours depending on district needs.
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Moravia Community School District procedures and applicable board policies. Evaluation may include consideration of work quality, dependability, attendance, safety practices, communication, cooperation, care of equipment and facilities, and completion of assigned responsibilities.
