Job summary

The position involves supervising inmates, maintaining security, and enforcing jail rules within the county facility. You will perform head counts, escort inmates, and manage access to services while following procedures to prevent escapes and maintain order.

Ideal candidates will have strong observational skills, the ability to work under stress, basic first aid/CPR knowledge, and the willingness to work varying shifts in a demanding environment.

Responsibilities

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Booking and discharging of inmates and the proper recording of all appropriate inmate demographic information.
• Control all access to jail.
• Photograph and fingerprint all new admissions.
• Interpret and comply with all bond conditions and commitment orders.
• Allow and supervise prisoner access to educational, recreational, religious and library services.
• Allow attorneys, probation agents, clergymen, and other authorized individuals access to inmate clients, document all appropriate inmate incidents and activities, including correspondence, visitation, medication, recreation and disciplinary problems.
• Control and deliver all prescriptions and non-prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals.
• Receive bail bond monies and fine payments.
• Comply with all procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and inmate activities.
• Identify and take appropriate action with all special inmates such as juveniles, females, mentally disturbed and physically ill inmates.
• Facilitate and document all huber and work release inmate departures and arrivals.
• Prevent and report all damage to jai property and jail matters.
• Maintain constant 24-hour supervision of all inmates and jail facilities.
• Run intoximeter on OWI arrests.
• Control inmates from jailer station and/or by patrolling corridors, dorms, cell blocks and work areas.
• Escort inmates (individually or in groups) to work assignments or other activities.
• Supervise inmates on work assignments.
• Inspect cells, dorms, hallways, and visitation area for contraband.
• Enforce rules of conduct by making both verbal and written reports to superiors.
• Check on sanitary conditions, fire and safety hazards.
• Assists in averting fights, riots, and escapes undertaken by inmates.
• Transfer to court, doctor, and other treatment clinics.
• Distributes cleaning and sanitation supplies; deliver commissary orders, medications and mail; picks up and delivers personal laundry and bedding for inmates.
• Operates all locking devices (manual or electronic).
• Advise public on visiting hours and supervises visiting.
• Other duties as directed by the Sheriff or designee for the efficient operation of the jail.
• Conduct head counts to ensure that each prisoner is present.
• Inspect conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at correctional facilities to ensure security and help prevent escapes.
• Monitor conduct of prisoners in housing unit, or during work or recreational activities, according to established policies, regulations, and procedures, to prevent escape or violence.
• Search prisoners and vehicles and conduct shakedowns of cells for valuables and contraband, such as weapons or drugs.
• Maintain records of prisoners' identification and charges.
• Record information, such as prisoner identification, charges and incidents of inmate disturbance, keeping daily logs of prisoner activities.
• Guard facility entrances to screen visitors.
• Use weapons, handcuffs, and physical force to maintain discipline and order among prisoners.
• Take prisoners into custody and escort to locations within and outside of facility, such as visiting room, courtroom, or airport.
• Settle disputes between inmates.
• Conduct fire, safety, and sanitation inspections.
• Serve meals, distribute commissary items, and dispense prescribed medication to prisoners.
• Provide to supervisors oral and written reports of the quality and quantity of work performed by inmates, inmate disturbances and rule violations, and unusual occurrences.
• Use nondiscipline tools and equipment, such as a computer.
• Participate in required job training.
• Issue clothing, tools, and other authorized items to inmates.
• Assign duties to inmates, providing instructions as needed.
• Inspect mail for the presence of contraband.
• Drive passenger vehicles and trucks used to transport inmates to other institutions courtrooms, hospitals and groups families, and work sites.
• Arrange daily schedules for prisoners, including library visits, work assignments, family visits, and counseling appointments.
• Supervise and coordinate work of other correctional service officers.
