IT System & Security Administrator
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced IT System & Security Administrator to maintain and secure our infrastructure, ensure business continuity, and support end users. The ideal candidate will manage servers, storage, backups and disaster recovery plans, administer security controls (firewalls, VPN, access management), and support applications including LIMS and Microsoft 365. This role balances hands-on technical administration, incident response, compliance (HIPAA), and helpdesk support to protect data and enable reliable IT services.
Please note this position is fully on site and relocation assistance is available on a case by case basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer Windows and Linux servers, virtualization hosts, and enterprise storage systems; perform routine maintenance, patching, and capacity planning.
- Design, implement and manage backup and disaster recovery solutions; perform regular backup verification, restores, and DR testing.
- Configure and maintain network security devices including firewalls, VPNs, and segmentation; monitor and respond to security events and incidents.
- Manage identity and access systems including Active Directory, Microsoft 365 administration, and group policy enforcement.
- Support and administer databases (MS SQL, Oracle) and ensure secure database access and backup procedures.
- Provide administration and operational support for LIMS and other laboratory systems; coordinate upgrades and troubleshoot integrations.
- Oversee data protection, encryption, data archiving, and retention policies to meet compliance and business requirements (including HIPAA).
- Monitor system and network performance; proactively troubleshoot issues and coordinate with network management to optimize connectivity and uptime.
- Act as tier 2/3 support for the helpdesk: investigate escalated incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes.
- Maintain documentation for configurations, runbooks, incident response, and change management; work with vendors for hardware, software, and managed services.
- Participate in security assessments, audits, and remediation activities; implement security best practices and awareness across the organization.
- Develop and test business continuity and disaster recovery plans; lead recovery efforts during outages and post-incident reviews.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience administering enterprise IT systems, servers, storage, and networks.
- Experience with backup administration and DR solutions (e.g., Veeam, CommVault, NetBackup) and proven restore/test experience.
- Strong knowledge of network and security technologies: firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and network management.
- Experience administering Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Group Policy, and Azure AD integration.
- Proficiency with databases (MS SQL and/or Oracle) including backup, restore, performance tuning, and security.
- Familiarity supporting LIMS or other laboratory information systems is highly desirable.
- Understanding of data protection, archiving, encryption, and HIPAA/privacy compliance requirements.
- Experience with server and storage administration, virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V) and SAN/NAS technologies.
- Solid troubleshooting and scripting skills (PowerShell, Bash, or similar) and automation experience.
- Excellent communication skills, customer service mindset, and ability to work independently and in a team.
- Relevant certifications preferred: Security+, CISSP, Microsoft Certified (M365/Azure), MCSA/MCSE, CCNA, or vendor-specific backup/storage certifications.
