Position
Sr. Network Engineer – located in Sterling, Virginia. Candidates must reside within a 25‑mile commute to Sterling as the position is 100% onsite.
Position Overview
The Senior Network Engineer will be part of the Network team responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining scalable, highly available network infrastructure across multiple co‑location facilities that support nearly 10,000 users and growing. The engineer will provide advanced technical and engineering support for IT infrastructure and customer‑facing services, using infrastructure tools and techniques to identify and resolve infrastructure and operational requests, and act as an escalation point for corporate IT departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Deploy, configure, manage and monitor network infrastructure (LAN, WAN) for high availability and optimal performance, as well as network security features.
- Install, set up and upgrade firmware on network equipment; perform periodical preventative maintenance of networking equipment software/firmware.
- Provide engineering support to install, configure, optimise, troubleshoot, monitor and manage deployment of Cisco routers, switches and FortiGate firewalls.
- Serve as the network/security subject matter expert around Fortinet technologies and solutions.
- Deploy and manage virtual networks and support cloud infrastructure.
- Automate network monitoring to provide a proactive approach to mitigating network issues.
- Create and maintain all required network and technical documentation, including diagrams and troubleshooting methodologies, using provided tools.
- Prepare network asset management documentation, including maintenance of network component inventory and technical specifications.
- Answer, evaluate and prioritise network incidents/tickets as they relate to outage escalation, and participate in triaging and resolving Tier 4 requests.
- Perform packet capture and analysis to troubleshoot and debug network issues.
- Keep stakeholders and project managers apprised of project status throughout the project life cycle with detailed and thorough communication.
- Liaise with vendors, customers and other IT personnel for problem resolution.
- Be self‑motivated and able to follow directions, complete time‑sensitive tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Identify opportunities to implement improvements and increased efficiencies on existing infrastructure.
- Identify and address network‑related vulnerabilities and establish a process to mitigate them.
- Establish, document, and maintain network technical standards, baseline configurations, and support processes and procedures.
- Fulfil routine communication requirements, utilising a ticketing system to document and manage client requests/issues and following change‑management policies and procedures.
- Follow and adhere to instructions, including SOPs.
- Work in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment.
- Be willing and able to travel for on‑site installations.
- Show flexibility to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as needed.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field is preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
- 10 years or more of experience in a corporate IT operations environment.
- 5 years of hands‑on experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting networking technologies including switches, routers, and firewalls.
- Experience with IPsec tunnel configuration, routing tables, dynamic routing and network troubleshooting.
- Experience in the set‑up of DMZ and/or multi‑layer network zones per data/information classification.
- Experience designing and leading the implementation of small to medium‑scale projects.
- Experience with Fortinet technologies such as FortiGate, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, etc.
- Experience with Service Provider/Datacenter class Cisco ASR/ISR routers and Nexus switches.
- Experience building hybrid environments to span existing on‑prem datacenters and Azure/AWS.
- Experience working with and designing disaster recovery datacenter solutions.
- Experience with packet capture and network monitoring tools such as PRTG.
- Experience with Cisco Meraki switches, WAPs and dashboard.
- Deep understanding of networking technologies and protocols such as L2/L3 routing/switching, IPsec, BGP, MPLS, VRF, QoS, Spanning‑Tree, OSPF, 802.11, ACL, DHCP, TCP/IP, DNS.
- Ability to develop network topology, wire diagrams and document detailed lab test plans and reports.
- Experience with established configuration and change‑management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to network infrastructure during critical maintenance windows.
- Knowledge of Carrier Services WAN, MPLS, DIA, etc. is a plus.
Certifications
- Fortinet technologies (NSE 4 or higher preferred).
- CCNP or higher preferred.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 lbs of equipment and stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl as required.
- Work in small spaces that may require bending and/or crawling to access cables.
- Work at a computer desk, using mouse and viewing screen, for potentially long periods.
- May be required to visit and work within correctional facilities.
- May be required to travel up to 20 % of the time to support facilities and remote staff, both locally and throughout different states.
