Gertens Family of Businesses, a large Midwest garden center and IT-supporting company, is offering an IT Hardware & Systems Intern position in Inver Grove Heights, MN. The internship runs January 2027 – June 2027, with up to 40 hours per week, giving hands-on experience across desktop provisioning, hardware upgrades, and end-user support.

You will work on real IT projects, gain exposure to networks, systems administration, and enterprise technology, and receive mentorship from seasoned IT

Qualifications

• Seeking students pursuing IT-related degree (IT/CS/MIS/Cybersecurity) or related field.
• Junior or senior standing preferred.
• Hands-on hardware experience with desktops/laptops.
• Familiarity with Windows OS and basic networking.
• Strong troubleshooting and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Build, configure, image, and deploy desktop and laptop computers.
• Perform hardware upgrades, repairs, and troubleshooting.
• Install and configure peripherals, printers, and mobile devices.
• Assist with network, workstation, and system support activities.
• Provide technical support and guidance to end users.
• Participate in IT projects such as asset management and process improvements.
• Assist with inventory tracking and hardware lifecycle management.
• Complete an individual project to showcase problem-solving skills.

Gertens is a family-owned business and one of the largest garden centers and greenhouse operations in the Midwest. Our IT team supports a diverse technology environment that includes retail operations, greenhouse production, logistics, finance, and corporate systems.

Duration: January 2027 – June 2027
Schedule: Up to 40 hours/week

What You'll Do

As an IT Hardware & Systems Intern, you will gain hands‑on experience supporting the technology infrastructure that powers our business. Responsibilities may include:

• Build, configure, image, and deploy desktop and laptop computers
• Perform hardware upgrades, repairs, and troubleshooting
• Install and configure peripherals, printers, and mobile devices
• Assist with network, workstation, and system support activities
• Provide technical support and guidance to end users
• Participate in IT projects such as asset management, monitoring dashboards, documentation improvements, or process automation
• Assist with inventory tracking and hardware lifecycle management
• Complete an individual project designed to showcase your technical and problem-solving skills

What We're Looking For

• Pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Cybersecurity, or a related field
• Junior or Senior standing preferred
• Hands‑on experience building, repairing, upgrading, or deploying desktop and laptop computers
• Familiarity with Windows operating systems and basic networking concepts
• Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Self‑motivated, curious, and eager to learn in a fast‑paced environment
