Job description

ISA Nuclear Safety Engineer - MOX Fuel Facility

The ISA Nuclear Safety experienced engineer will support the design and development of a next-generation MOX fuel fabrication facility in the United States. This role will apply risk-informed methodologies in accordance with 10 CFR Part 70 to support nuclear safety analysis and licensing activities.

The position plays a key role in the safety organization, acting as a technical interface between U.S. engineering teams and expert support teams based in France with extensive MOX fuel cycle experience. The engineer will contribute to the implementation of ISA (Integrated Safety Analysis) methodology, including identification of accident sequences, determination of credible initiating events, and specification of Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS).

This role supports nuclear safety documentation required for regulatory engagement (pre-application interactions, construction authorization requests) and ensures safety requirements are embedded throughout the system design lifecycle.

The project is part of a broader advanced nuclear fuel cycle strategy, including the multi-recycling of plutonium from used nuclear fuel to improve resource efficiency and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform nuclear safety evaluations and risk assessments using an Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) methodology in accordance with 10 CFR Part 70.
  • Identify and analyze accident sequences, credible initiating events, and develop Items Relied On for Safety (IROFS).
  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of risk-informed nuclear safety methodologies aligned with NRC expectations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of ISA-based training materials and provide guidance to engineering teams on nuclear safety principles.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable NRC regulations, DOE requirements (where applicable), and internal nuclear safety standards.
  • Define, interpret, and translate nuclear safety requirements into engineering design constraints and system requirements.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary safety specialists, including fire protection, human factors engineering, and criticality safety teams.
  • Ensure nuclear safety requirements are properly communicated, integrated, and verified across engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to nuclear safety case development and licensing documentation, including Preliminary Safety Analysis Reports (PSAR) and Construction Authorization applications.
  • Participate in design reviews, safety reviews, and multidisciplinary technical coordination meetings.
  • Review and assess safety analyses developed internally or by subcontractors for compliance and technical adequacy.
  • Track implementation of nuclear safety requirements throughout design evolution and configuration changes.
  • Provide technical input and periodic reporting to Nuclear Safety leadership.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Nuclear,Safety Engineering, or related discipline).
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in nuclear or other high-hazard regulated industries.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear safety principles and risk-informed analysis methodologies.
  • Experience contributing to nuclear safety cases or licensing documentation.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary and international engineering environments.
  • Strong technical writing and Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Professional proficiency in English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in nuclear fuel cycle facilities, MOX fuel fabrication or regulated nuclear installations.
  • Knowledge of ISA methodology, fire safety analysis, human factors, or criticality safety.
  • Experience applying risk-informed approaches in U.S. nuclear regulatory environments (NRC, DOE).
  • Experience in international engineering projects involving U.S. stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with fire analysis or fire protection engineering is an advantage.
What We Offer
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents, as well as a 401(k) plan with 4% company match.
  • Generous paid time off, starting at 20 days per year and increasing to 25 days after 3 years of service.
  • A mission-driven environment focused on delivering scalable, low-carbon energy solutions to meet growing global energy demand.
  • A collaborative and international culture that values technical excellence, transparency, innovation, and cross-functional teamwork.
