The Internal Revenue Service is recruiting Revenue Agent (Examiner) staff nationwide with positions in Cincinnati, OH; Columbus, OH; Dayton, OH; Independence, OH; Toledo, OH. Candidates with a CPA or accounting degree are eligible for entry to mid-level roles across GS-5 to GS-12 grades.
Responsibilities include performing audits of various taxpayers, preparing tax calculations for court cases, and conducting independent examinations of complex returns.
Use your bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting or your Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to qualify for an entry to mid‑level Internal Revenue Agent (Examiner) employment opportunity. Nationwide opportunities exist.
Hybrid Remote and Telework Eligible: Telework eligible positions do not guarantee telework. Employees must meet and sustain IRS telework eligibility requirements (e.g., reporting at least twice a pay period to your assigned Post of Duty (POD)) and supervisor's approval to participate in the IRS Telework Program. Employees must also be within a 200-mile radius of their official assigned post‑of‑duty (POD) while in a telework status. As a Revenue Agent (Examiner), you will independently examine and investigate complex income tax returns filed by individuals or organizations. Revenue Agents (Examiners) are known for their ability to accomplish comprehensive analytical examinations of tax returns to determine tax liability and violations of Federal tax statutes and to make fair and impartial recommendations for criminal prosecution and civil penalties. You’ll use your skills and knowledge to perform professional accounting work, as well as provide accounting and financial management advice and assistance to higher levels of management. You’ll examine accounting and financial information systems that reflect a variety of complex financial operations.

The following duties describe what a Revenue Agent (Examiner) does at the full working level. The complexity of your assigned cases and the amount of supervision and guidance you will receive is based upon the grade level you are hired at and advance through to reach the full performance level of GS‑12.
Federal experience is not required to qualify for the grade levels identified below. You will qualify for one of the following opportunities based on your specialized experience and/or education.
