Job summary

The Division of Facilities Management - North District of the State of Colorado is seeking an irrigation technician to manage and optimize campus irrigation systems, monitor water usage, and perform maintenance across multiple facilities. This is a full-time, in-person role serving critical infrastructure and campus operations.

Responsibilities include inspections, repairs, system start-up/shutdown, and guidance to staff on irrigation installations and best practices.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of full-time irrigation experience in large-scale settings (parks, campuses, or similar).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid non-restricted Colorado driver’s license.
  • Must meet background check requirements and residency within Colorado for the duration of employment.

Division of Facilities Management - North District

The Division of Facilities Management (DFM) is a customer-driven support organization responsible for operating, maintaining and managing the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) facilities and campuses according to all applicable standards. This is done in a manner that promotes the CDHS mission of providing a safe, sanitary and effective environment for clients, youth, residents, patients, consumers and staff and enhances the quality of life in CDHS facilities, campuses and in the surrounding neighborhoods. These services include the day-to-day facility maintenance and operational needs of buildings, grounds, custodial and fleet services.

North District services the following facilities:

  • Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan (CMHHFL)
  • Wheat Ridge Regional Center to include 20 Group Homes
  • Gilliam Youth Services Center
  • Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center (Aspire, Golden Peak, and Summit YSCs)
  • Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center
  • Mount View Youth Services Center
  • Platte Valley Youth Services Center
  • Prairie Vista Youth Services Center

This is a full time, in person and essential position.

This position serves as an irrigation technician for Northern District DFM and manages all irrigation-related operations, including system start-up and shutdown, emergency repairs, system monitoring, and performance optimization using web-based controls and manual irrigation clocks. The role performs irrigation and low-voltage electrical control work to ensure efficient system operation including oversight of campus well and well pump systems.

Duties:
  • Independently performs irrigation work related to the campus irrigation system, including inspections, installations, repairs, and monitoring water flow across campus irrigation systems.
  • Evaluates irrigation system performance, water flow, pressure, and sprinkler coverage to identify issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Adjust irrigation schedules to support water conservation and efficient operations.
  • Diagnoses irrigation system failures and determines appropriate repair methods based on system conditions and operational needs.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs of low-voltage electrical control systems associated with irrigation operations.
  • Evaluates well and pump system performance and implements operational or maintenance adjustments to maintain reliable irrigation service.
  • Provides training, guidance, and technical support to staff on irrigation operations and systems, sprinkler repairs, and irrigation installation and maintenance best practices and departmental standards.
  • Reviews completed irrigation work to ensure compliance with operational standards, irrigation best practices, and department expectations.
  • Provides performance-related feedback and operational input to the Grounds Supervisor
  • Applies herbicides and/or pesticides to trees, shrubs, and lawns according to federal and state regulations. Maintains shrubs with electric trimmers. Irrigates, aerates, fertilizes and preserves lawns, trees, and shrubs. Operates lawn mowers, tractors, dump trucks, snowplows, trenchers and state vehicles. Prevents possible hazardous accidents with patients, staff, and visitors by removing ice, snow, debris, and sand from parking lots, walkways, and door entrances. Monitors and repairs slip, trip, and fall hazards relating to sidewalks, pathways, and building entrances. Assures proper disposal of disregarded materials by unloading disregarded materials to proper disposal sites. Repairs roads and streets by using proper and adequate tools and/or material in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Ensures safe access to facilities during inclement weather. Operates snowplow trucks, snow blowers, tractors and hand shovels during inclement weather events. Removes ice and snow from sidewalks, parking lots, and grounds using hand tools, shovels and small bladed vehicles. Applies ice melt and sand as needed.
  • Operates a variety of manual tools and equipment to include tractors, plows, lifts, hand and riding mowers, trimmers, edgers, gators, and other grounds care equipment to maintain lawns, trees, bedded plants and flowers. Mows grass, trims, and rakes; plants, transplants, sprays and trims flowers, shrubs and small trees. Cuts and removes limbs from dead trees.
  • Operates, maintains, sets up, and cleans grounds and irrigation-related equipment and vehicles in support of campus operations.
  • Assists with maintaining safe, functional, and well-maintained campus outdoor environments.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of all landscaping projects to include design, customer input, cost estimating, and project management. Provides assistance to other departments such as electrical, plumbing, and construction by removing building debris, excavating electrical and plumbing ditches, and/or supporting running electrical and plumbing lines and water main repairs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Call Back

Applies when an eligible nonexempt employee is required to report to work before the start or after the end of a scheduled shift. An eligible nonexempt employee does not have to be on call eligible to receive call back pay. If there is no release from work between the call back hours and regular shift, it is considered a continuation of the shift and call back does not apply; instead, if applicable, the nonexempt employee may earn overtime or compensatory time. When a nonexempt employee is called back, they are entitled to a minimum of two (2) hours of their regular base pay (call back pay) or pay for the actual amount of time spent responding to the call, whichever is greater. Call back time is counted as work time.

Essential Positions. Positions that perform essential services directly necessary for the health, safety, and welfare of patients, residents and offenders of state institutions or state facilities. Employees in essential positions can only be FLSA nonexempt and can be required to work unexpected or unusual work hours to perform the essential and/or emergency services of the department without delay and/or without interruption.

Experience Only

Applicants must have at least two (2) years of full-time experience with the following:

  • Commercial irrigation experience that included installing irrigation systems, system start-up and shutdown, emergency repairs, system monitoring and performance optimization in environments such as parks, golf courses, schools, campuses, etc.;
  • Large-scale landscaping and grounds maintenance experience in environments such as parks, golf courses, schools, campuses, etc.

  • This position requires State of Colorado residency at the time of application, and residency within the state throughout the duration of employment in this position.

  • Out-of-State Driver's License holders must obtain a valid, non-restricted Colorado Driver's License within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Must successfully pass Motor Vehicle Check.
  • Travel – This position will be required to drive State Vehicles as part of daily work assignment from site to site equipped with tools to perform daily duties. Travel to training and meetings. On occasion, this position travels to other districts.
  • Must be willing to receive an annual influenza vaccination or provide a document for a medical exemption or a letter for religious exemption.
  • Must successfully pass a Tuberculosis (TB) test.
  • Will be required to work various hours for coverage, weather related issues and essential/emergency services outside of normal business hours.
  • Must be available to respond in person to after hours calls via call back to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay and/or interruption.
  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials – Proximity to moving, mechanical parts; Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; Exposure to electrical shock, and or working in high exposed places.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must:
    • Disclose that information on the application.

CDHS Selection Process
  • Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40/hours per week).
