Job summary

MasTec CE&I is seeking a helper to raise, modify, place, bolt or weld structural-steel members as part of a crew. You will read measuring tools, assist with hoisting and alignment, and help fit components to drawings under supervision.

The role emphasizes safety, reliability and teamwork on industrial construction sites, with long 12-hour shifts and outdoor conditions. Relevant experience and a readiness to perform varied tasks are required.

Qualifications

  • 6 months to 1 year related experience or training; equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 6 months of helper experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

Raises, modifies, places and bolts or welds structural-steel members to form completed structures or structure frameworks, working as member of crew.

Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret measuring tools such as, tape measure, speed square, framing square…etc. In order to perform task accurately.
  • Fully Understand Plant North and drawing directional.
  • Assist in setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural‑steel members.
  • Assist in fastening steel members to cable of hoist, cable, slings or rope.
  • Assist in guiding member, using tag line (rope). Pulls, pushes, or pries steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device.
  • Assist in forcing members into final position, using turnbuckles, sleever bars, come alongs, jacks, and hand tools.
  • Assist in aligning holes in member with corresponding holes in previously placed member by drifting drift pins or handle of wrench through holes. Align bolt holes with spud wrenches, sleever bars, bull pins and/or drift pins.
  • Assist in bolting aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.
  • Assist in cutting and welding of steel members to make modifications using oxyacetylene torch, cut off wheels, porta bans and (arc) electric welding equipment.
  • Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision. Must have the ability to take direction from a higher skilled worker or foreman.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • 6 months - 1 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 6 months of experience in helper role
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations.
  • When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10's and 100's and ability to perform these operations using units weight measurement and volume
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards
  • Other may duties may be assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
  • May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; Use arms, hands, and legs fully; Push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
  • Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
  • Uncontrolled environmental conditions: Constant change in weather and site conditions.
  • This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to- safety toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
  • Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
  • May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
  • Evaluate information based on measurable standards; and see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
  • Keep good balance and work at heights.
  • See well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Hear well (either naturally or with correction.)
  • Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
