Job summary

UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM seeks a Neurodiagnostic Intraoperative Monitoring Technician to perform neurophysiological monitoring in the operating room during vascular, orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures. You will record EEGs and evoked potentials, assist in training staff, and care for patients across age groups from neonates to geriatrics.

Qualifications

• Essential: 6 months directly related neurodiagnostics experience.
• Nonessential: bilingual in English and additional languages.
• Credentials: CPR for Healthcare Providers within 30 days.
• Registration in EEG; ABRET registration for evoked potentials (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Perform baseline and intraoperative SEP testing for multiple nerves.
• Perform BAEP and VEP studies intraoperatively.
• Conduct EMG recording during pedicle screw stimulation.
• Record EEG during carotid/ intracranial procedures.
• Cross-train to EEG/Long Term Video EEG monitoring when no OR cases scheduled.
• Maintain equipment and ensure sterile technique in the OR.

Job description

Position Summary

Perform neurophysiological monitoring in the operating room to assess the functional integrity of the peripheral and/or central nervous system during vascular, orthopedic and neurosurgical operative procedures. Record procedures including electroencephalograms, evoked potentials (median, ulnar, peroneal, posterior tibial nerves; brainstem auditory evoked potential; motor evoked potential; EMG potentials during pedicle screw stimulation or cranial nerve region cases; electrocorticography). Assist with training other Neurodiagnostics Lab staff in intraoperative neural monitoring testing. Patient care assignments may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Responsibilities

• Perform baseline and intraoperative Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SEP) testing for median, ulnar, peroneal, and posterior tibial nerves in accordance with established standards of practice.
• Perform baseline and intraoperative Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP) and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) studies in accordance with established standards of practice.
• Perform EMG recording during pedicle screw stimulation to assess if a screw breaches the pedicle wall and requires repositioning.
• Perform facial EMG recording during surgical procedures near cranial nerves or other case-specific EMG recordings as directed by the surgeon.
• Perform motor evoked potential testing under the direction of a Neurophysiologist or surgeon.
• Perform intraoperative electroencephalogram (EEG) recording during carotid endarterectomy or intracranial surgeries as requested by the surgeon.
• Perform cortical strip and cortical grid electrode brain recordings, including organizing and connecting patient-specific interfaces, montage programming and recording of waveform data under the direction of an attending Neurophysiologist.
• Demonstrate knowledge of general principles of anesthetic techniques and their effects on recorded waveforms and the structures generating them.
• Demonstrate competent troubleshooting to correct problems with instrumentation, recording, and electrode function; maintain infection control and sterile technique for equipment entering the sterile field.
• Prepare, examine and test all monitoring equipment, electrodes and stimulators for each OR procedure; ensure all equipment is in working order.
• Demonstrate knowledge of OR equipment and the effect on electrodes and peripherals; recognize critical periods during surgery where monitoring is essential.
• Adhere to safety procedures regarding use of chemicals and biohazardous or flammable materials in the OR.
• Cross-train to perform EEG and Long Term Video EEG monitoring or non-surgical evoked potential testing when no OR cases are scheduled.
• Perform functions of END/EEG Technicians in their absence or during high census.
• Enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs and current literature.
• Practice safe electrical procedures to minimize risk to patients.
• Follow patient safety policies, procedures and protocols; proactively seek opportunities to improve patient safety by questioning current policies; identify and report environmental conditions that may put a patient at risk; report potential safety concerns and medical errors in a timely manner; encourage patient participation in their own care.

Physical and Working Conditions

• Medium work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently; greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects; workload may exceed typical light work.
• Working conditions include potential exposure to chemicals and biohazards; PPE required.
• Shift: May be required to rotate shifts; may be on-call.
• Tuberculosis testing is completed upon hire and as required.
