Job description

At MFS, you will find a culture that supports you in doing what you do best. Our employees work together to reach better outcomes, favoring the strongest idea over the strongest individual. We put people first and demonstrate care and compassion for our community and each other. Because what we do matters – to us as valued professionals and to the millions of people and institutions who rely on us to help them build more secure and prosperous futures.

THE ROLE

The Derivatives Investments & Operations Business Systems Architect serves as the primary technology partner and point of contact for MFS’s global investment professionals. This role is responsible for architecting, designing, and evolving the derivatives platform that supports the end-to-end investment lifecycle—from research and portfolio construction through trade execution, settlement, valuation, collateral management, and post-trade processing. The Architect works at the intersection of Investments, Trading, Technology, and Operations, translating complex business needs into scalable, resilient, and integrated technology solutions that align with MFS’s business and technology strategy. This role provides a unique opportunity to shape the future of the derivatives technology ecosystem, improve integration across business applications, streamline workflows, and enable faster, more informed investment decision‑making. In addition, the Architect serves as a subject matter expert for the Derivatives Platform, establishes architectural direction and best practices, and provides business leadership and mentorship to less experienced members of the team.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Serve as the subject matter expert and strategic technology partner for the Derivatives Platform, shaping its architecture and evolution while developing a deep understanding of investment and operational workflows to proactively identify opportunities for new capabilities, integration, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner closely with product owners, business analysts, investment professionals, operations teams, architects, and global development teams to design, implement, and support scalable technology solutions that address evolving business needs across financial derivative instruments.
  • Translate complex business needs into clear, actionable requirements and solution specifications; establish priorities, manage dependencies, and coordinate delivery across multiple Agile teams to ensure solutions achieve intended business outcomes and align with broader platform and technology strategies.
  • Provide business leadership in diagnosing and resolving complex, recurring, and high‑impact issues across the Derivatives Platform, including application, data, infrastructure, integration, and security‑related incidents. Drive timely resolution while identifying root causes and advocating for resilient, long‑term solutions that improve platform stability and reduce operational risk.
  • Coordinate across global Technology and business teams, including Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Data, Application Support, and Engineering—to establish clear ownership, manage dependencies, track progress, and ensure issues are resolved effectively with appropriate communication and follow‑through.
  • Collaborate effectively within a global, matrixed organization, building strong partnerships across Infrastructure, Enterprise Architecture, Cybersecurity, Cloud, Data, and other Technology teams to align priorities, influence decisions, and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Ensure Derivatives Platform solutions and implementations align with enterprise architecture standards, technology strategies, security policies, and risk and control frameworks, while balancing global consistency with evolving business needs.
  • Perform operational excellence across the Derivatives Platform by upholding service‑level commitments and driving continuous improvement initiatives that enhance platform reliability, resiliency, quality, efficiency, and overall user experience.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement by identifying opportunities to strengthen processes, reduce operational risk, and improve support and delivery practices.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to less experienced Business Systems Analysts and other Technology colleagues, sharing domain expertise, technical knowledge, and best practices to strengthen team capabilities and effectiveness.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Finance, Economics or a related discipline
  • 6‑8+ years of progressive experience in investment platform application development, including 1–2 years working on a financial derivatives application.
  • Deep understanding of derivative investment management technologies and workflows across derivative asset classes (equity options, IRS, CDX, FX derivatives, total return swaps), research, trading, and data domains.
  • Experience in analyzing and supporting Financial Derivatives solutions in the Investment area including front office teams such as portfolio managers, analysts, and traders, with an ability to translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
  • Proven ability to organize, plan, manage and deliver projects with a geographically dispersed cross‑functional team in an Agile SDLC framework.
  • Experience with SQL, scripting, and diagnostic tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to navigate a global matrixed environment and influence without direct authority.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to balance day‑to‑day needs with long‑term goals/initiatives.
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
  • Preferred: Experience with a commercial derivative vendor platform, e.g. Calypso, FIS, Murex.
  • Preferred: Experience with Charles River Investment Management System.
  • Preferred: CFA or progress towards one.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
