The Strategic Advisory team focuses on companies at the intersection of Energy Transition, Power and Sustainability, while the Capital Markets team has underwritten hundreds of billions of dollars in equity and debt transactions through the firm’s broker-dealer, Independence Point Securities.
Role Overview
We are seeking an Investment Banking Associate to join the Strategic Advisory team at Independence Point Advisors, with a focus on Energy Transition, Power and Sustainability-related sectors. The Associate will play a central role in deal execution and business development, working directly with senior team members in a lean, entrepreneurial environment.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about a career in investment banking and have a natural curiosity about the core sectors we cover. They will be a self-starter with strong modeling, Excel and PowerPoint skills, a deep grasp of corporate and project finance, and the ability to own workstreams end-to-end. Associates at IPA take ownership of analyses and materials, oversee Analyst output, and engage actively in client and prospect dialogue.
The role is expected to be in person at IPA’s NYC office four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities
- Drive day-to-day execution: Run day-to-day execution on M&A, private capital raising and recapitalization transactions across Energy Transition, Power and Sustainability, coordinating internal and external workstreams.
- Drive work product and modeling: Build, review and refine valuation work, financial models and corporate and project finance analyses, including DCF, pro forma merger analysis and trading and transaction comparables.
- Lead the creation of client materials: Drive the development of pitch books, process documents and board-level presentations, including market updates, sector analyses, TAM overviews and investor insights, using PowerPoint, PitchBook, FactSet, Excel and other industry-specific databases.
- Engage in client interaction and pitches: Take a leading role in client meetings, execution calls and pitch preparation, partnering with senior team members on strategic discussions with C-suite and board-level clients.
- Mentor and develop Analysts: Provide day-to-day guidance, review and feedback to Analysts, and contribute to junior development efforts including recruiting and training.
- Conduct economic and industry research: Perform in-depth research on industry trends, economic indicators and market dynamics to inform client deliverables and the firm’s sector perspectives.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (MBA a plus but not required)
- Preference for 2 to 4+ years of investment banking experience; candidates with equivalent experience at an institutional investor (e.g., private equity, growth equity, infrastructure, credit) interested in transitioning to advisory will also be considered.
- Experience within Power, Energy and Infrastructure sectors.
- Deep technical foundation in financial modeling, valuation and transaction structuring across M&A, capital raising and related advisory work, with the ability to apply skills creatively to a diverse set of clients’ needs.
- Track record of active involvement in client-facing situations and supporting transaction execution, including deal structuring and term sheet negotiations.
- Detail-oriented with exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
- Ability to manage a variety of transactions and projects simultaneously.
- Resourceful self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset and comfort operating in a lean, high-ownership environment.
- Polished interpersonal skills, comfortable engaging with clients and team members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and a high level of professional integrity.
