Job summary

Symetra is seeking a Financial Reporting Analyst within Investment Accounting and Reporting to support investment accounting, financial close, regulatory reporting, and data governance. You will help ensure GAAP and Statutory reporting accuracy across bonds, equities, mortgages, derivatives, and other investments, partnering with Accounting, Investments, and Technology.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • CPA or progress toward CPA preferred.
  • Relevant work experience in public accounting, insurance or finance preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles; Statutory accounting knowledge preferred.
  • Experience with financial close, reconciliations, account analysis, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and document technical accounting matters.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting analyses.
  • Research, document, and resolve accounting issues related to a diverse investment portfolio, including fixed income securities, equities, mortgage loans, derivatives, alternative investments, and tax credit structures.
  • Support GAAP and Statutory financial reporting processes, including preparation of disclosures, schedules, variance analyses, and management reporting deliverables.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and support internal and external audit requests, regulatory examinations, and accounting policy compliance initiatives.
  • Serve as a steward of investment accounting data by monitoring data quality, performing reconciliations and validation activities, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of information used in financial reporting and decision-making.
  • Partner with Accounting, Investments, Finance, Technology, and external service providers to resolve accounting, operational, and data-related issues and improve end-to-end processes.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvement, helping enhance the efficiency, scalability, and control environment of the investment accounting function.
  • Support business initiatives, system implementations, reporting enhancements, and data governance framework, including documentation of business processes, controls, and reporting requirements.
  • Deliver high-quality work products with strong attention to detail, professional judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join us as a Financial Reporting Analyst in Investment Accounting and Reporting!

About this Role

Symetra's Investment Accounting department is seeking a Financial Reporting Analyst to support investment accounting, financial close, regulatory reporting, and financial data governance activities. This role will play a key part in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of investment accounting records across a diverse portfolio including bonds, equities, mortgage loans, derivatives, hedge funds, limited partnerships, and tax credit investments. The position will partner closely with Accounting, Finance, Actuarial, FP&A, Investments, Technology, and third-party service providers to support timely close processes, maintain strong financial controls, and deliver accurate GAAP and Statutory reporting.

In addition to financial reporting responsibilities, this role will serve as a steward of investment accounting data, helping drive data quality, reconciliation, process automation, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.

Your Responsibilities

Requirements
