Job summary

UC San Diego Health is seeking an Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Technologist/Senior Technologist to monitor the nervous system during complex surgeries at Jacobs Medical Center. You will perform IONM, assist in patient prep, and help maintain high standards of patient care in a fast-paced surgical environment.

This role requires CNIM certification, extensive neurophysiology experience, and the ability to lead and train staff.

Qualifications

  • ABRET CNIM within two years of hire and maintenance of certification. To be considered for the Sr. IONM Technologist, CNIM required.
  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six months of hire date.
  • Two years of experience in surgical neurophysiology practicing at the CNIM level; Sr. IONM Technologist requires four to six years at CNIM level in a tertiary hospital care setting.
  • Demonstrate competency in EEG, live EMG, triggered EMG for neural element stimulation, SSEP, tcMEP, T04, and AEP for all patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform recording and monitoring in a variety of cases including brain and brainstem procedures, orthopedic spine procedures, and vascular surgery.
  • Aide in patient preparation, conduct IONM, and follow up to ensure quality of care.

DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of a supervising neurophysiologist and lab manager, the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Technologist/(IONM) Senior Technologist works under the direction of the physician neurophysiologist and other physicians in the hospital during complex and specialized surgical procedures, monitoring the nervous system to reduce or avoid complications.

Responsibilities include performing recording and monitoring in a variety of cases including brain and brainstem procedures (i.e. for tumors (including language and motor brain mapping), orthopedic spine procedures (i.e. for scoliosis), and vascular surgery (i.e. for aneurysms); aiding in patient preparation, conducting IONM (protecting the nervous system) and following up to ensure quality of care. Additionally, the Senior IONM Technologist may provide support toinpatient EEG service for EEG and other evoked potentials, may train entry level technologists, serves as lead, assists in program operations and scheduling; perform other duties as assigned. All performance expectations associated with this position are to be performed at an expert level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • ABRET CNIM qualified, acquired within two (2) years of hire date, and maintenance of certification. To be considered for the Sr. IONM Technologist, ABRET CNIM required.
  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Two (2) years of experience in surgical neurophysiology practicing at the CNIM level. To be considered for the Sr. IONM Technologist, Four to six (4 - 6) years at CNIM level in a tertiary hospital care setting required.
  • Demonstrate competency in EEG, live EMG, triggered EMG for neural element stimulation, SSEP, tcMEP, T04, and AEP for all patients.
  • Competence in programming the necessary related equipment (Cadwell).
  • Comfortable performing multimodal monitoring in complex spine, brain/brain stem, and vascular surgeries.
  • Familiar with a variety of neurological measurement techniques before, during, and after surgery to monitor a patient's condition.
  • Required to meet educational requirements for IONM Technologist:
  • CAAHEP Diploma OR
  • Current R. EEG T or R. EP T. OR
  • Bachelor's Degree (higher degree acceptable) OR
  • Certificate of completion from ABRET recognized program
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS; MS, PhD level education and/or other allied health degree or certification.
  • DABNM, REEG, REPT.
  • Advanced capabilities including Electrocorticography (ECoG) with strips/grids, central sulcus localization, stimulation protocols for brain mapping (awake language and awake/asleep motor including continuous intracranial MEPs), DBS neurophysiology, peripheral nerve evaluations including the ephaptic response, and brainstem/spinal cord stimulation/mapping.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours, locations and on-call evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the IONM Technologist or Sr. IONM Technologist level. The pay scale for the IONM Technologist is $63.04-$78.43/hour. The pay scale for the Sr. IONM Technologist is $68.89-$85.64/hour.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $131,628 - $163,762 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $63.04 - $78.43
