Job Description

Position: Intramural Sport/Activity Coach

Compensation: Intramural Coach Stipend

Description: The intramural coach supports and oversees the assigned intramural sport or activity in collaboration with the Athletic Director. The coach is responsible for providing a safe, organized, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate experience for students. Candidates should have a passion for coaching and mentoring students, strong organizational skills, and effective communication skills. Previous coaching experience is preferred but not required.

Candidates must hold a valid ISBE Professional Educator License, a Substitute Teaching Certificate, or complete the IESA-approved coach's education program. They must also complete and maintain district-mandated training, such as concussion protocols, CPR/AED, first aid, and cardiac arrest awareness, within required timelines.

Head Coach Expectations:

  • Attend and participate in required intramural, athletic department, or school meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director regarding program expectations, schedules, participation, and facility needs.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Department and Athletic Director on facility needs.
  • Inspect facilities before use, ensure general cleanliness after use, and set up sport/activity-specific needs.
  • Maintain flexibility with practice/activity schedules and be available for 2-3 weekly sessions, generally no more than 60-90 minutes per session, based on school location.
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate activities focused on skill development, participation, teamwork, safety, and sportsmanship.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and the Athletic Director to uphold a strong academic culture.
  • Supervise students before, during, and after intramural practices, games, activities, and dismissal.
  • Communicate with parents, families, and students regarding schedules and other program information.
  • Have a communication plan for engaging families and implement an approved communication platform.
  • Communicate student concerns through approved channels while maintaining confidentiality; refer eligibility, discipline, academic standing, and medical clearance matters to the Athletic Director/administration.
  • Distribute, collect, and inventory all equipment and uniforms, when applicable.
  • Report facility, equipment, safety, injury, or supervision concerns promptly to the Athletic Director.
  • Follow all district safety procedures, Emergency Action Plans, concussion protocols, weather/heat guidelines, and injury reporting requirements.
  • Confirm that students are cleared for participation before allowing involvement in intramural activities; coaches may not independently determine eligibility, medical clearance, or return-to-play status.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Must follow SD104 Coaches Handbook and SD104 Board Policy
  • Position is contingent on student participation & if there are not enough participants, the season can be suspended with no compensation.
