Position Overview

The University of UtahSpencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine seeks an accomplishedacademic interventional cardiologist to serve as Chief of theSection of Interventional Cardiology within the Division ofCardiovascular Medicine, in the Department of Internal Medicine.This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative andcollaborative physician leader to guide one of the nation's premieracademic interventional cardiology programs while advancingexcellence in patient care, research, education, and clinicalinnovation across the University of Utah Health system.

The Section Chief will provide strategic, clinical, academic, andoperational leadership for a nationally recognized program thatserves patients throughout Utah and the Intermountain West. As akey member of the Division's executive leadership team, the SectionChief will work closely with departmental, hospital, and healthsystem leaders to develop and implement a vision for continuedgrowth of coronary, structural heart, peripheral vascular, andadvanced cardiovascular intervention programs while promotingoutstanding clinical outcomes, scholarly achievement, andmultidisciplinary collaboration.

The successful candidate will possess an established record ofacademic accomplishment, visionary leadership, and clinicalexcellence, with demonstrated success in developing faculty,fostering multidisciplinary programs, advancing research, andbuilding high-performing clinical teams.

The Section of Interventional Cardiology

TheSection of Interventional Cardiology is a nationally recognizedacademic program providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art careacross the full spectrum of cardiovascular intervention. Facultyperform advanced coronary intervention, structural heartinterventions, peripheral vascular intervention, complex andhigh-risk PCI, chronic total occlusion intervention, mechanicalcirculatory support, and catheter-based therapies for acutecardiovascular disease.

The Section is fully integrated within the University of UtahHealth Cardiovascular Service Line and partners closely withCardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Imaging, Heart Failure,Electrophysiology, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, and referringphysicians throughout the Intermountain West. The program serves asa major regional referral center for complex cardiovascular diseaseand supports a broad portfolio of investigator-initiated andindustry-sponsored clinical research, translational science, andinnovation.

The Section also plays a central role in the education ofcardiovascular disease fellows, interventional cardiology fellows,residents, medical students, and physician-scientists. Faculty arecommitted to excellence in procedural training, mentorship,simulation-based education, and the development of future leadersin academic cardiovascular medicine.

Leadership Responsibilities

The Section Chiefwill provide visionary leadership for all aspects of the Section'sclinical, academic, operational, and research missions.Responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership
  • Develop and execute a strategic vision that advances theSection's national reputation and supports the missions of theDivision, Department, and University.
  • Identify opportunities for programmatic growth, innovation, andregional expansion.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability,professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as an engaged leader within the Cardiovascular ServiceLine and University Health system.
Clinical Excellence
  • Promote exceptional quality, safety, patient-centered care, andclinical outcomes.
  • Lead multidisciplinary Heart Team programs across coronary,structural heart, and complex cardiovascular intervention.
  • Advance regional STEMI and cardiovascular emergency systems ofcare.
  • Improve patient access, operational efficiency, and value-basedcare.
Faculty Development
  • Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain outstanding faculty.
  • Support academic advancement and leadership development.
  • Foster an inclusive culture that values collaboration,innovation, professionalism, and mutual respect.
  • Promote physician engagement and wellness.
Research and Innovation
  • Expand investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinicalresearch.
  • Strengthen collaborations in translational science,engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence.

  • Promote innovation in cardiovascular devices, proceduraltechniques, and outcomes research.
Education
  • Support excellence in fellowship education and proceduraltraining.
  • Promote educational scholarship and curriculumdevelopment.
  • Mentor trainees at all levels and cultivate the next generationof academic interventional cardiologists.
Health System Leadership
  • Partner with health system leadership to advance strategicgrowth across the Intermountain region.
  • Promote responsible stewardship of clinical, financial, andhuman resources.
  • Utilize quality metrics and operational data to improveperformance and patient outcomes.
  • Build collaborative relationships with referring physicians andregional hospitals.
Qualifications

Candidates must be boardcertified in Cardiovascular Disease and/or InterventionalCardiology and be eligible for medical licensure in the State ofUtah.

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • A distinguished record of clinical excellence in interventionalcardiology.
  • Academic accomplishments consistent with appointment at therank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Progressive leadership experience within an academiccardiovascular program.
  • A record of faculty mentorship and successful programdevelopment.
  • National or international recognition through scholarship,research, innovation, or leadership.
  • Outstanding communication, collaboration, and organizationalskills.
