Job summary

Children’s Wisconsin is seeking a part-time interpreter (20 hours/week) dedicated to bridging language and cultural gaps for patients and families. You will facilitate complex communication between staff and patients, provide interpretation and translation, and support care in medical or community settings.

Must have at least two years of interpreter experience, be bilingual in Rohingya, and complete national certification within 2 years. Travel between Milwaukee locations may be required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years interpreter experience required, preferably in a medical setting.
  • Bilingual in Rohingya with ability to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps.
  • Requires at least a High School diploma or GED/HSED.
  • Prefers completion of Medical Interpreting coursework.
  • National certification must be completed within 2 years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates complex communication between staff and clients or patients, including parents or guardians.
  • Provides interpretation, sight translation, and/or translation of documents as needed.
  • Interpreting may occur in medical or community settings; languages beyond Spanish.
  • Shift between simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and multitask for multiple patients.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitates complex communication between staff and clients or patients, which includes parents or guardians.
  • Communication may take place in a medical or community setting; providing interpretation, sight translation, and/or translation of documents on an AVS (After Visiti Summary).
  • Communication would be in languages other than Spanish.
  • Ability to shift from one language to another in simultaneous and consecutive mode of interpreting.
  • Ability to multi-task in order to manage interpretation for more than one patient/family at a time.
  • Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children’s values and support our mission and vision.
Requirements
  • Minimum of two years interpreter experience required, preferably in a medical setting. In-house contractors may qualify after full rotation has been completed, generally around 12 months.
  • Bilingual who speaks, reads and writes proficiently in both native and target languages (Rohingya) with ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff.
  • Requires at minimum a High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).
  • Prefers completion of Medical Interpreting course to include ethics, medical terminology or proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting.
  • Multi-semester Medical Interpreter course completion through a Technical School or higher education institution.
  • Must pass verbal and written proficiency tests with an overall score of 80%. Tests include solid knowledge of complex medical terminology through completion of Medical Terminology class or proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting and knowledge of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics.
  • National certification must be completed within 2 years of hire either through CCHI or the National Board, and certification must be maintained.
  • Computer and word processing expertise including MS Word, comfort with an iPad and working in our electronic health record.
  • Good customer service skills, strong communication skills and excellent listening skills.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail including ability to prioritize and assess needs.

  • Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, CMI-Certified Medical Interpreter
  • National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters
Compensation & Benefits
  • This is a part-time, FTE .5 (20 hours per week average).
