Job summary

EMPLOYMENT BEGINS: As soon as possible

PRIMARY PURPOSE
  • To function in the role of interpreter for deaf students in assigned classes, and/or as an instructional aide in assigned deaf education classes as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • College classes in American Sign Language or comparable experience utilizing American Sign Language as a communication mode
  • Interpreter certification from the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - Board for Evaluation of Interpreters at Level I or above
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
  • Interpret fluently in Signed English and/or American Sign Language
  • Sign Language
  • Reverse interpret fluently in a variety of situations
  • Implement the Code of Ethics for Interpreters
EXPERIENCE
  • None required beyond certification by the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Be on time to class and stay for the entire class period
  • Interpret teacher presentations and or lectures
  • Interpret/voice classroom interactions
  • Interpret films and video presentations and assemblies
  • Determine seating arrangements in order for the students to be able to see the teacher, interpreter, overhead and chalkboard
  • Familiarize self with class content including technical sign vocabulary specific to each class. Request textbooks and handouts in advance when possible
  • Clarify points for the students without assuming the teacher's role
  • Repeat instructions only when needed; not routinely
  • Refer student questions about the lesson to the teacher
  • Encourage deaf students to participate in class discussions
  • Avoid needless conversations with the students
  • Interpret student interaction with other students, teachers, and administrators in non classroom situations
  • Instruct students as directed by the teacher
  • Rely on the teacher to monitor classroom behavior
  • Attend district, regional and state staff development to enhance and improve sign language skills
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
